  • 14th Zika virus infection in South Korea, ex-Thailand

Seoul:South Korea has confirmed another case of the Zika virus infection, raising the number of people infected with the virus here to 14, health authorities said Saturday.

A 34-year-old man was confirmed to have been infected with the mosquito-borne virus on Friday, Yonhap news agency reported.

He is presumed to have been bitten by a mosquito during his trip to Thailand from September 8 to 16.

The man remains in stable condition and is currently receiving an additional test at a Seoul hospital.

Ten South Koreans infected with the virus have travelled to Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines and Vietnam while four others made a trip to Central and South American nations such as Brazil, the Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said.

The virus, first discovered in Africa, is almost non-life threatening but is linked to thousands of birth defects in newborn babies like abnormally small heads and improperly developed brains.
