Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Health Ministry and epidemiologists have estimated that the number of monkeypox cases in Indonesia could reach 3,600.

"Together with epidemiologists, we compared the rate that occurred in Britain. With the key population in Indonesia, we estimate that the case(load) could reach 3,600 in Indonesia," director general of disease prevention and control at the ministry, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, said at a virtual press conference on Thursday.

He noted that the estimated figure could increase if intervention and education do not go well.

"The most important thing is implementing a clean and healthy lifestyle. Do not have sexual activity if you have monkeypox symptoms, and (healthy people must) always have safe sex," he added.

He said the higher number of cases this year compared to last year was due to several factors and one of them was the COVID-19 pandemic because of which travel between countries remained limited last year.

According to him, the local transmission this year occurred from several imported cases...

Monkeypox in Jakarta: Total 45 Cases, 26 People Recovered
                    By Young Harris
                    Saturday, December 2 2023 - 15:06 WIB

The DKI Jakarta Health Service (Dinkes) reported additional positive cases of monkey pox or monkeypox.

As of Friday (1/12/2023) at 19.00 WIB, there were a total of 45 confirmed mpox cases domiciled in the capital city.

The number of 45 patients recorded by the DKI Jakarta Health Office is an accumulation of the first case in August 2022. So, the total number of cases in 2023 will be 44 people.

"DKI Jakarta MPox Domicile Update as of 1 December 2023 at 19.00 WIB. Total positive cases are 45 people, 1 case in August 2022 (recovered). For the total positive cases in 2023 alone there are 44 people," said the Head of the Surveillance Section of the DKI Jakarta Health Office, Ngabila Salama to Ini.com, Jakarta, Saturday (2/12/2023).

However, of the total of 44 cases confirmed in 2023, 26 people have been declared cured. Meanwhile, 16 other positive patients are still undergoing intensive treatment in isolation rooms at a number of hospitals in Jakarta. Treatment will be carried out until the wound dries completely.

Ngabila said that the 41 cases detected in Jakarta throughout 2023 had a PCR positivity rate of 23 percent. All patients also became infected from sexual contact.

"All had mild symptoms and all patients were men aged 25-50 years," he continued.

Still from the DKI Health Office's records, there are around 150 people with Discarded status or the PCR test results show the patient is negative.

Ngabila emphasized that all Mpox patients must continue to be tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

"All HIV and STI patients are screened for active Mpox symptoms and if anyone has had close contact (even if they have no symptoms) in the last month with someone who is positive for Mpox, they should immediately undergo a PCR swab. Moreover, if they show symptoms, they must immediately undergo a PCR swab," he said.

Previously, the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) confirmed that one monkeypox patient had died. This was reported by the Ministry of Health on Thursday (23/11/2023).

Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P), Dr. Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, said that the patient who died at RSCM was not purely due to monkeypox disease. The male patient is known to also suffer from several other comorbidities.

"But due to other causes Ileus Obstruction and (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) HIV positive with a very low viral load," said Maxi.
