Taipei, Feb. 21 (CNA) The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Tuesday announced the first monkeypox case this year, detected in a male Republic of China (Taiwan) national who traveled to several European countries in January and February.

The imported case, the fifth in Taiwan since the disease started spreading internationally in May last year, was confirmed on Feb. 15, with the individual developing symptoms that included blisters, rashes, a sore throat, joint pain and body aches, CDC official Kuo ****-wei (郭宏偉) told a news conference in Taipei.

An epidemiological analysis suggested that the man was most likely infected in Austria, CDC spokesman Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞) said.

Contact tracing carried out by the CDC has identified 39 local residents with whom the man has come into close contact, including one close friend and 12 colleagues, while the rest were at the hospital where he sought medical assistance, Lo said. ...

Native Monkeypox Appeared! CDC announces expert meeting to discuss who to vaccinate

    2023-03-01 11:20 United Daily News

There are two new local cases in the country, a male in his 40s in the north and a male in his 20s in the south; a total of 7 cases have been reported since last year. CDC spokesman Luo Yijun said that 25 contacts are currently listed, including four family members who live with them and two close contacts. A total of six are listed as high-risk objects. Doctors will evaluate whether to do post-exposure vaccination. It will be monitored until March 20; an expert meeting will also be held tomorrow to discuss whether the vaccination targets need to be revised.

Luo Yijun said that the previous monkeypox in China was imported from abroad, and this is the first local case, which means that the risk of local transmission has increased. Local cases have also appeared in Asia this year, including Japan and Thailand, showing that the new crown epidemic has slowed down. With the loosening of epidemic prevention measures in various countries, the unseal of borders, and the resumption of international tourism, it is easy for the monkeypox epidemic to have more conditions to spread.

Zhan Peijun, deputy director of the Chronic Infectious Diseases Division of the CDC, said that although monkeypox is a zoonotic disease like bird flu, since human-to-human transmission began, its contagiousness is better than bird flu. In Taiwan, it is mainly through close contact and mucous membranes. , Respiratory and other transmission, less due to contact with infected objects or contact with animals.

      Government announcement

There are 2 confirmed cases of local monkeypox in my country. People are urged to protect themselves. If they have suspected symptoms, they should seek medical treatment as soon as possible and inform them of their travel history and contact history.

      Release date: 2023-03-01

The Department of Disease Control (hereinafter referred to as the CDC) announced today (1).The 6th and 7th confirmed cases in my country are men in their 40s in the north and men in their 20s in the south. They live in Hsinchu County and Kaohsiung City respectively. They developed fever, prurigo papules, and blisters in late February. , swollen lymph nodes, tongue ulcers and other symptoms were assessed by a doctor and tested and reported. They were confirmed positive on February 26 and 27, respectively. The two cases had no recent history of overseas travel and were determined to be local cases. They are currently being treated in isolation in the hospital; A total of 25 related contacts were listed after the epidemic investigation, and they have undergone health education and self-health monitoring for 21 days.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pointed out that since the outbreak of this wave of monkeypox in the UK in mid-May last year, at least 109 countries have reported more than 86,000 confirmed cases in the world. The number of cases is mainly distributed in the Americas (58,367 cases) and Europe (25,849 cases). The cumulative number of cases in the United States is 30,193, accounting for 35.1% of the global total. Recently, the global epidemic situation has slowed down, and the number of new cases is mostly distributed in the Americas (183 cases). Among neighboring countries, Japan has accumulated 22 cases, Singapore has 21 cases, and Thailand has 15 cases. In addition, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong and China have also reported cases. Among them, the local epidemic in Japan has recently increased. According to the statistics of the World Health Organization (WHO) as of February 14, 2023, 96.5% of global cases are male; the median age is 34 years old, there are at least 267 cases of children under 5 years old, and the proportion of sexually transmitted infections is about 68.7% . The WHO announced on July 23 last (2022) that the monkeypox outbreak was listed as a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC)" and it remains so.

The CDC explained that my country has listed monkeypox as a second-class legal infectious disease on June 23 last year. As of today, a total of 47 suspected cases have been reported, of which 2 local cases and 5 imported cases were confirmed (infected countries are 1 case in Germany, 3 cases in the United States, 1 case in Austria), and the remaining 40 cases were excluded.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminds that the transmission of monkeypox is limited. This wave of epidemics is mainly transmitted from close contacts to people. It reminds the public that when going to endemic areas or domestic high-risk sites, they should implement self-protection and avoid possible and unspecified people. High-risk areas such as social activities where people are in close contact, such as skin lesions, such as rashes, blisters, macules, maculopapules, blisters, pustules, etc., as well as fever, chills/chills, headache, muscle pain, back pain, If you have suspected symptoms such as joint pain and swollen lymph glands (such as around the ears, armpits, neck or groin), you should seek medical treatment as soon as possible, and actively inform the doctor of your travel history and contact history. In addition to continuing to strengthen quarantine measures at international ports and public risk communication and health education, the department has also purchased and allocated antiviral drugs and monkeypox vaccines for eligible persons, and strengthened monitoring, notification, and timely adjustment of relevant prevention and control policies. For relevant information, please visit the Global Information Network of the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov.tw) or call the domestic toll-free epidemic prevention hotline 1922 (or 0800-001922).

The fear of the Mpox spreads again... 23 new infections per day in Taiwan
          Reporter Baek Ji-yeon
          2023-07-05 17:07:28

In Taiwan, 23 new cases of MPOX (formerly known as monkeypox) were confirmed in one day.

On the 5th, local media such as the central news agency reported that the cumulative number of infected people exceeded 200. According to reports, Taiwan's Center for Disease Control announced that 23 new Mpox infections occurred the day before.

Of these, 21 were infected in Taiwan, and two were imported cases. The number of “high-risk contacts” who had close contact with them was counted as 45.

As a result, the cumulative number of Mpox infections in Taiwan has risen to 221.

Of the infected, 155 have been cured, and six are hospitalized. Currently, 60 people are said to be recovering at home.

In Taiwan, the first case of Mpox infection was confirmed on June 16 last year. The first infected person was an international student from Germany. After entering the country, he showed symptoms of suspicion during the self-isolation process of Corona 19, and as a result of a detailed test, it was investigated as positive.

In the same month, the Centers for Disease Control designated Mpox as a class 2 statutory infectious disease to which dengue fever belongs, and announced it.

Mpox was an endemic disease in Central and West Africa, but since May last year, it has spread to more than 100 countries around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) for mfox in July last year, but lifted it in mid-May after 10 months.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has expanded the scope of the Mpox vaccine to those who have been exposed to the risk of Mpox infection in the past year. In Taiwan, it has been investigated that 62,468 people have been vaccinated with the Mpox vaccine so far.
