Japan has confirmed its first case of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the government said Tuesday, stoking fears of another wave of infections heading into winter.
A man in his 30s was found to be infected with the heavily mutated strain, which was first discovered in southern Africa last week, after arriving from Namibia at Narita airport near Tokyo on Sunday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a press conference.
Japan has confirmed its first case of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus, government officials says, as scientists race to determine how transmissible it is and whether it can evade immunity from vaccines or previous infection.
