Officials warn of escalating African swine fever nationwide
    July 16, 2025 - 10:47

HÀ NỘI — African swine fever (ASF) is showing signs of resurgence across the country, with widespread underreporting and concealment of outbreaks threatening disease control efforts, according to officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

Speaking at a meeting on ASF prevention held in Hà Nội on Tuesday, Phan Quang Minh, Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock Production and Veterinary Medicine, revealed that since the beginning of 2025, 514 outbreaks have been recorded in 27 provinces, affecting over 29,000 pigs. Of these, more than 30,000 pigs have died or been culled.

Currently, 248 outbreaks remain active across 20 provinces, with nearly 20,000 pigs infected.

Compared to the same period in 2024, the number of outbreaks has decreased by 41 per cent, and the number of pigs culled has dropped by more than 60 per cent...

Thousands of pig farmers devastated by African swine fever outbreak in Vietnam’s Nghe An
Numerous pig-farming households in Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam have been suffering severe losses as African swine fever (ASF) continues its relentless spread, according to local authorities.

Since the start of 2025, the provincial livestock sector has recorded 86 outbreak sites, resulting in the culling of 23,216 pigs, equivalent to 1,543 metric tons of meat, according to Nong Nghiep & Moi Truong (Agriculture & Environment) newspaper.

In recent months, the epidemic has surged dramatically, hitting small-scale farmers the hardest.

Province-wide data shows that 3,327 pigs were culled in May, nearly 10,000 more in June, and an additional 7,912 from July 1 to 15.

The rapid spread of the disease has left many farmers in despair after suffering devastating financial losses...

African swine fever hits 39 localities in Da Nang, over 4,770 pigs culled

African swine fever (ASF) has rapidly spread across Da Nang City in central Vietnam, hitting 39 wards and communes, while leaving over 4,770 sick pigs culled between July 1 and 28, according to the city’s agriculture department.

In response, authorities have deployed over 4,020 liters of disinfectant to infected areas to sterilize the environment and control outbreaks at culling sites.

The risk of continued ASF outbreaks remains high due to several factors such as a large pig population, small-scale backyard farming accounting for 80 percent of total pig production, and poor compliance with veterinary hygiene standards...

The surge in cases is threatening to disrupt the country’s food supplies, as the government scrambles to curb a nationwide livestock crisis

          Published: 2:56pm, 5 Aug 2025

Vietnam has been hit by an increasing number of outbreaks of African swine fever, with the number of infected pigs more than tripling in just two weeks, state media said on Tuesday.

The country has detected 972 African swine fever outbreaks so far this year, up from 514 reported in mid-July, the Tien Phong newspaper reported.

The number of pigs infected has risen to more than 100,000 from 30,000 over the same period, the paper said, citing Vietnam’s agriculture ministry. The infected pigs have died or been culled.

“[African swine fever] has broken out on a very large scale, spreading across the country, seriously affecting the livestock industry, especially the supply of pork,” Nguyen Xuan Duong, chairman of the Animal Husbandry Association of Vietnam, was quoted as saying. He added that no province was safe from the disease.

African swine fever has disrupted the global pork market for years. In the worst outbreak over 2018-19, about half the domestic pig population died in China, the world’s biggest producer, causing losses estimated at over US$100 billion. The outbreaks in Vietnam last month prompted Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to send an urgent directive to provinces and government agencies to deploy measures to curb the disease, which the government said was threatening to disrupt food supplies.
