Despite the outbreak of cattle diseases in the region, the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) says there is no need to worry that it should affect the country, thanks to a rapid alert system in place.

According to RAB, the East African region is in the grip of cattle diseases where in Uganda, districts of Ntungamo and Isingiro bordering Rwanda's Eastern Province, are experiencing an outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

Preventive measures followed on the Rwandan side, where since June 19 the animals' movement from Uganda was stopped and veterinarians dispatched to 18 entrances of the animals where the disease can spread from. According to Dr Otto Vianey Muhinda, director of veterinary services in RAB, Nyagatare, Kayonza and Gatsibo are the most closely monitored districts because they are close to the border.

Given that the spread of the disease is caused by not only infected animals through aerosols, but also contact with contaminated farming equipment, vehicles, etc. anything coming from Uganda is disinfected.

"Cars, motorcycles and even people coming from Uganda, have to pass through a bath containing a disinfectant placed at all the entrances by veterinary staffs to control the disease," Dr Muhinda said.
