    Foot-and-mouth outbreak detected near Famagusta
    Cyprus
    Monday 15 December | 12:18

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has been detected on a farm in the Famagusta district village of Ayios Sergios, the Cyprus Turkish veterinarians’ association said on Monday.

It explained that the north’s veterinary department had conducted examinations and collected samples following a tip-off about the animals in the village, and that with the diagnosis having been made, “all necessary measures will be taken and implemented”.

These measures, it said, include “quarantine, vaccination, disinfection, both farm and individual biosecurity measures, and control and restrictions on animal security and movement”.

In specifics, it said the movement of animals from Ayios Sergios “has been stopped”, and that the movement of people and animal products in and out of the village “has been ensured in a controlled manner within the scope of quarantine measures”, before making a list of suggestions for how the outbreak should be managed...

Authorities have placed 23 livestock premises under strict quarantine and will begin culling 260 cattle tomorrow as they move to contain a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak at a farm in Livadia, Larnaca.

The measures were finalised at a broad emergency meeting of all relevant authorities that concluded earlier today. European and national protocols have been fully activated, Veterinary Services said.

The 23 quarantined premises lie within a 3km protection zone around the affected farm, where the movement of animals and products has been temporarily restricted. Daily sampling and inspections will be carried out within the zone to prevent the disease from spreading...

Authorities confirmed three new cases of foot and mouth disease within the infected zone in the Dromolaxia-Meneou area of Larnaca, bringing the total number of affected units to 49, officials said on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists, veterinary services spokeswoman Sotiria Georgiadou said all recommendations made by European Commission experts during their visit to Cyprus in February had been implemented, with sampling and laboratory testing continuing on that basis.

The latest cases involve two sheep units with approximately 240 animals in total and one cattle unit with 118 animals.

Culling operations are ongoing in both Nicosia and Larnaca, although some technical delays were reported in Larnaca due to recent rainfall. Operations in Nicosia are expected to be completed imminently...
