EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was notified of unusual mortality in commercial turkey farms in Ontario. The birds tested negative for common avian diseases and for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The CFIA National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease has now confirmed that the virus was avian metapneumovirus. Genome sequences of the virus are more than 99.8% identical to the avian metapneumovirus isolate aMPV-B/turkey/VA/USA/ADRDL-3 (NCBI accession #PP273458.1). This is the first confirmation of Turkey rhinotracheitis in poultry in Canada. No control measures are undertaken.
