    EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
On 6 August 2021, the Central Veterinary Laboratory received a bovine sample from the Laboratory of Production and Animal Health of Córdoba (Andalusia), which was recorded with the entry number Reg. 2021/002312 and under the request for confirmation of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The National Reference Laboratory carried out the confirmation tests authorised in accordance with EU Regulation 1148/2014. Two confirmatory tests were carried out and, as they were positive, a further discriminatory test was carried out to determine the strain of BSE involved (the result being BSE Low). The sample was taken within the framework of the national surveillance programme for TSEs (sampling of dead animals or animals not slaughtered for human consumption over 48 months of age). The animal was a cow, of mixed breed, born on 05/04/2008.
