    Hamilton hit with first-ever case of equine encephalitis virus
    One horse infected but no human cases to date, according to public health department

    Hamilton has recorded its first-ever case of a horse testing positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus.

    The EEE virus is one of a group of mosquito-transmitted viruses, including West Nile virus, that can cause the inflammation of the brain known as encephalitis.

    The virus is generally found in birds and then transmitted by mosquitoes to other animals.

    In most cases, humans bitten by a mosquito infected with the EEE virus won't develop any symptoms...

    Ontario: More Eastern Equine Encephalitis reported in Niagara horses

    The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs confirmed two cases of EEE from the Regional Municipality of Niagara on September 12th, 2018. Both horses were unvaccinated and had no travel history.

    One horse is recovering from depression and ataxia with supportive treatment. The other horse was euthanized following the development of sudden and severe neurological signs. The total number of EEE cases for 2018 is ten...
