    Howler monkeys are dying

    Thursday February 11, 2016 | 4:00

Howler monkeys are still dying on the site La Solita, while Health started to vaccinate against yellow fever.

Until last Wednesday zonal coordination of Environment confirmed the death of ten primates, but yesterday the district of Health reported 24.

Carlos Mendoza, head of the Health District covering Manta, Montecristi and Jaramij? cantons revealed that on Wednesday, when The Journal published the death of the animals, raised an alert to intervene in site Solita whole team epidemiological surveillance.

The goal, Mendoza said, was to collect samples from monkeys to determine what is killing them.

The intervention took place with Ministry of Environment and the National Institute of Public Health Research (INSPI).

In the place of the African snail samples, as determined by the people, it is what is causing disease in monkeys was also taken.

Melva Morales, the surveillance area of the Ministry of Health, also confirmed that several residents of La Solita were vaccinated against yellow fever.

She clarified that the injection does not imply that the monkeys are dying from the disease, since the cause is still under investigation.

He emphasized that the vaccine is a preventive measure for the population.

Intervention elsewhere. Mendoza explained that intervention in La Solita all the holiday took place and will run ten days to Pile commune, also in Montecristi, and the "monkey trail" located in the forest of Pacoche rural parish of San Lorenzo, in Manta.

Mendoza said he intended to extend to other areas is to prevent the disease that is killing the monkeys reach other habitats of primates.

In these places it is expected fumigated, place abate and eliminate mosquito breeding sites. It was also vaccinated against influenza.

"What we are doing is ensuring the health of people because if we must be careful epidemiological alert is generated," said the district chief.

The epidemiological team also will be monitored to rule out that some inhabitants of these areas have similar to the disease that killed the monkeys symptoms.

Deaths could be extended. Carlos Solorzano, veterinarian recommended capture the herd (La Solita), monitor it and prevent it from mixing with other specimens, considering that there are ecological corridors that connect to Pacoche in that sector, and death of animals could extend.

"The species is threatened. The ideal is to sample the population and not only of many individuals, and the entire herd that exists in the place should go into quarantine "he said.

For veterinary death by old age is ruled out, "because they continued to die. All they were found on the floor and is not normal because the howler monkeys never fall to the ground. Born and live in the trees and down only to take water, "he said Solorzano, who is director of the Center for Rescue and Rehabilitation of Wildlife Fauna Our Technical University of Manabi.

The coach insisted that the investigation must be in place to prevent the spread of the disease.

"Monkeys do not eat live animals. Perhaps the snails passing through the leaves of the trees left the baba, but we do not know anything concrete, "he said.

Gov. Susana Due?as said that those who had contact with animals are being given medical treatment until the results of the samples taken from primates and find the cause.

Due?as said that there are three ministries working on the theme: Environment, Health and Agriculture.

The official asked the public tranquility and prudence ministries.

"We call prudence, we want no unnecessary alerts are activated and do not be alarmed the population," he quoted.

While in La Solita residents they call on the authorities to drop the snails Montecristi that only this year began to appear on the site.

          Cutest die while causing investigated

As of Friday 30 dead monkeys were recorded, but yesterday reported three more, bringing the number of animals that died up to 33.

What is the cause of the dead of howler monkeys in La Solita-Montecristi?

There is still no official response, "and you can not make a diagnosis until proven by medical tests which virus, bacteria or disease that affects primates in the province of Manabi," he told Daily Express veterinary Denisse Singre Viteri.

He added that the investigation must be comprehensive, and although there is evidence that one of the monkeys would gastric bleeding could be caused by various reasons, including the hypothesis that is now being studied: the presence of African snail.

Experts in this type of snail are already investigating whether baba Manabi mollusk infested leaves, water or fruits you eat the monkey.

As a precaution and without this meaning that the monkeys are dying of yellow fever, it is vaccinating the population against the disease. Melva Morales, the surveillance area of the Ministry of
          Health confirmed the action.

To Singre should also consider what other substances could contaminate food of the monkeys, because monkeys tend to spend more on the trees and fall only drinking water.

Then you should see if the pesticides used in the area could also be a cause. The vet said that years ago monkey deaths have already occurred: some attacked by dogs, others by mosquito bites, but nothing to be alarmed, and to move health personnel as today.

What other causes can be investigated?

What it is being done to investigate concerning African snail is fine, without obviates find out other diseases such as yellow fever.

"But careful !, which study this involvement caused by mosquitoes is not to alarm the public;. Because there is no evidence should be made to rule out the study only one of many viral effects that could be the cause of death in the monkeys, "said Washington German specialist in infectious diseases and professor. He added that they should also find out if the cause is rabies.

German insisted that should not trigger an epidemiological alarm; He reiterated that all analyzes are part of the investigation and nothing else. There is still no official diagnosis.

Two weeks ago he learned about the first 10 dead howler monkeys on the site La Solita of Montecristi.

But now it is expected that in the coming days the results of the tests have been carried out and which could cause the death of monkeys are.

The Wildlife Refuge Coastal Marine Pacoche, located in Manabi, is temporarily closed to the passage of tourists, as an epidemiological fence. This decision was taken by the Ministry of Environment (MAE), while the cause of death of 44 howler monkeys is investigated.

According to Edgar Pe?afiel, Zonal Coordinator 4 MAE, the monkeys were found in the reserve, near the towns La Solita, The Hugo, scrapie and Pocitos, located between Manta and Montecristi.

In the two weeks since he began to find the bodies of animals, the MAE has worked on a permanent table with other institutions such as the Ministry of Health, with its laboratories; the Ministry of Agriculture, through Agrocalidad; and the municipalities involved.

According to data from the MAE, in Pacoche there is a population of 600 howler monkeys. So far it has worked on two fronts. The first was the removal of blood and tissue samples from dead animals to determine the cause of the deaths. The second front is to protect the health of the inhabitants of the areas affected by the reservation. To this end, the Ministry of Health has implemented campaigns yellow fever vaccination for citizenship.

According Lucia Luge, veterinary of the Ministry of Environment, the tests serve to confirm or exclude deaths from yellow fever, Leptospira, Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya. the possibility that the monkeys have been infected with diseases of the species or that his death was caused by other factors are also discussed.

The first analyzes are already being processed by laboratories Ecuador, but also have sent samples to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. "At least three results to confirm or rule out disease are needed," said Luge.

While the results are known, the Ministry of Environment is working on an emergency plan in the affected area. From ma ?ana tents veterinary care specialists assembled and conducted field monitoring to rescue sick and healthy animals to be subjected to monitoring and evaluation. "In the case of sick monkeys find their symptoms are observed and palliatives treatments aimed at the symptoms that appear to be sure what we are facing is provided" Luge said.

The Ministry of Environment works to safeguard the wildlife and provide a relevant official information once the results obtained certified laboratories.

It is waiting for the toxicological analysis of water samples.

Ecological Reserve and Protected Forest Pacoche, located in Montecristi, Manabi province is characterized by abundant vegetation. In the place is a lot of howler monkeys Alouatta palliata, who live in high higuerones and large trees.

MAE captured a live monkey in Pacoche for submission to quarantine

Technicians perform tests howler monkey found in Pacoche

                    Manabi, February 23, 2016

A howler monkey was captured alive on February 22 by a technical team from the Ministry of Environment (MAE) in the forest Wildlife Refuge Pacoche Coastal Marine Region Manta, Manabi province. The primate, apparently healthy, was taken to the vet camp MAE settled in the area. The animal will be quarantined for observation.

Edgar Pe?afiel, zonal coordinator 4 MAE, said the monkey samples were taken for laboratory analysis and that he will practice trials in order to demonstrate any pathology in order to progress with the investigation into the mass killing of primates.

At the time, the team of specialists MAE continues to conduct field inspections, looking for dead or sick monkeys for sampling. Between 1 and 22 February, the Foreign Ministry reported 51 bodies of howler monkeys in a state of advanced decomposition.

Pe?afiel said that "during the tours have not been observed dead or diseased herds. The behavior of registered herds is rather active. "
Strict implementation of biosecurity protocols for the entry of specialized personnel, as well as restrict the transit tourists along the paths of the reserve, as an epidemiological fence, continue, until certain results are taken on the causes of death of the primates and while no conditions that can cause harm to human beings who inhabit the area are discarded.

It also continues the MFA coordinated work with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP) and the Ministry of Public Health (MSP). The latter entity is responsible for analyzing the risks of zoonoses, presence of vectors and parasites. It also analyzes the aquatic toxicity, the botanical specimens and makes histopathological tests for evidence that can guide an accurate diagnosis.

The Environment Ministry denies those issued by some media in recent days news, in which the death of monkeys was associated with the diversion of river channels made by people close to the shelter of Pacoche shrimp.

The MFA will continue to report regularly on the progress of the investigations.

non-human primates infected with the virus Zika in Ecuador

On March 9, Ecuador reported the detection of infection Zika virus in a howler monkey. Analysis of tissue samples from heart and spleen of a dead monkey Zika virus were positive by the RT-PCR technique. The samples were collected as part of the investigation of an epizootic (39 dead monkeys) registered between 1 and 10 February in a national park in the province of Manabi. The samples were also analyzed for influenza, dengue, leptospirosis and yellow fever; resulting all negative. This is the first detection of the virus infection in nonhuman primates Zika notified by Ecuador and the first in the Americas. More research is needed to determine the role of these animals in the epidemiology of the disease.

The Zika virus was first isolated in a sentinel rhesus monkey in the forest Zika Uganda in the 1940s Currently, the prevalence of the Zika virus in monkeys and other nonhuman primates is unknown. Described animal diseases of the Zika virus in nonhuman primates in the Forest Zika between 60 and 70. So far, there is no evidence that the Zika virus is transmitted to humans by contact with animals.
