    Nigeria: Committee Begins Fight Against Avian Flu - Tours Yobe Councils

    Damaturu ? Yobe State Public Enlightenment Committee (PEC) on avian influenza has embarked on tour of some local government areas of the state.

    The tour is to guard against possible outbreak and spread of bird flu and other diseases in the state.

    Members of the committee led by the Director of Information in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Mohammed Babe Abubakar, were at Fika and Jakusko local government areas to discuss with the council executive, traditional rulers, and owners of poultries and farmers of other birds.

    Abubakar said the last avian influenza outbreak consumed many fowls and birds in the state, adding that the state government was so disturbed that it decided to set up the committee that would continue to update knowledge of bird diseases, their prevention and control.

    He also sought for the cooperation of the people towards ensuring the consumption of healthy fowls in the state while noting that the state was endowed with birds.

    Remarking, Desk Officer for Avian Influenza in the state, Dr. Iliyasu Maina Yusuf, said millions of people died as a result of bird flu outbreak in 1918, 1957 and in 1968/69. He said Nigeria had the first case in February 2006 and that Fika and Jakusko local government areas were the first casualties.

    Yusuf pointed out that with the support of the World Bank and the Federal Government, many who lost their birds to avian influenza were compensated and to avoid practices that could guarantee easy spread in case of outbreak, there was the need to sustain PEC.

    To ensure the sales of birds in a more control manner, he disclosed that a Live Bird Market would be built in Damaturu, the state capital, as he urged local government councils in the state to also build such markets.

    He advised poultry farmers to always report any diseases noticed in their birds to curtail spread. He added that the government was disturbed and the world because bird flu could easily be transmitted into human and could also lead to eventual death.

    Vice Chairman of Jakusko council, Abdulkarim Kurkushe, and Secretary of Fika Local Government Area, Alhaji Audu Garu, who received members of the committee at their various domains pledged to spur efforts towards the establishment of Live Bird Market in their areas. They pledged support to the committee and expressed appreciation to the World Bank, the Federal Government as well as the state government and other development partners for the efforts made to tackle the avian influenza that caused havoc in 2006.

    The committee also visited district head of Fika, Maina Alhaji Mohammed and that of Jakusko, Ali Maina Wagani.
