        The overall situation is Libya is not stable. An Egyptian doctor and 2 family members were murdered there recently in a botched kidnapping attempt.

            Woman suspected to be infected by unknown virus

            Director of Tobruk Medical Center Faraj SMN said, on Sunday, and the death of a woman at the age of 65 years and a fourth case is suspected that she had the same virus is not known.

              I have some serious doubts that this is actually H5N1. I can think of two far more likely possibilities:

              1. This is seasonal/H1N1 flu, and the translators/reporters are messing things up. The age of the patients, as well as their widespread distribution (and lack of mentioned bird exposure) suggests this is not H5N1.

              2. Plague is endemic in Tobruk, with two actual outbreaks (and several more suspected/reported) in the past six years. Reports of unknown respiratory fatalities in Tobruk should be tested for plague.

              It is not clear to me either that Libya has the laboratory facilities to diagnose H5N1.
