Maku confirmed that the quarantined patients had contact with the country?s first EVD casualty, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, who died three weeks in a Lagos private Hospital, stating that a nurse among the suspected victims left Lagos for Enugu, despite the warning against the trip.

Nigerian doctor clear of Ebola, 5 others recover

It has not been all bleak news about the Ebola virus pandemic. In Nigeria, the week is closing with something to cheer as Nigeria?s Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Saturday announced that the first Nigerian confirmed to have contracted the Ebola virus has been discharged after full recovery.

Chukwu, who briefed newsmen in Lagos, said the patient was discharged ?after conclusive discharge protocols??, adding that she could go home to resume her normal life.

Five other Ebola patients have almost fully recovered, he said.

A female doctor not identified by the minister, had attended to the Liberian, Mr Patrick Sawyer, who brought the disease to Nigeria.

Chukwu said that Nigeria had recorded 12 confirmed cases, four deaths and 189 persons under surveillance in Lagos, and six persons under surveillance in Enugu.

He said that all the persons under surveillance were secondary contacts.

?All the patients under treatment have now moved to the new 40-bed capacity isolated ward provided by the Lagos State Government. Additional equipment has also been made available to the new isolating ward by the Federal Government??, he said...

Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh, the consultant physician, who had contracted the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) from the Liberian, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, who imported the virus into Nigeria, is dead.

Sources close to Adadevoh, 58, said she succumbed to the disease Tuesday evening.

Adadevoh led the medical team at First Consultants Medical Centre, a Lagos-based hospital, that treated Sawyer.
She was said to have fallen into a coma on Monday and despite the valiant battle by the medical team to save her, she could not survive the scourge of the disease.

Her passing brings the total number of deaths from the Ebola virus to five in Nigeria.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) ? Two alarming new cases of Ebola have emerged in Nigeria, widening the circle of people sickened beyond the immediate group of caregivers who treated a dying airline passenger in one of Africa's largest cities.

The two new cases were infected by their spouses, both medical workers who had direct contact with Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, who flew into Nigeria from Liberia and Togo and infected 11 others before he died in July. The male and female caregivers also then died of Ebola, Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said Friday.

Nigerian officials initially claimed the risk of exposure to others was minimal because Sawyer was whisked into isolation after arriving at the airport. But Lagos state health commissioner Jide Idris later acknowledged that Sawyer was not immediately quarantined when he arrived, because doctors didn't suspect Ebola at that point.

Epidemiology and surveillance

Between 19 and 20 August 2014, a total of 142 new cases of Ebola virus disease (laboratory-confirmed, probable, and suspect cases) as well as 77 deaths were reported from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

Health sector response

Questions have been received in WHO Headquarters about the original proposed budget for the response and the new draft budget, which is being reviewed by partners. The increase in needed resources is based on improved data and understanding of the situation on the ground in the affected countries. The new estimation of costs is derived using a unit-cost model, built for the most intense transmission areas and reflects the average operational costs based on the current situation in the affected countries. The major assumptions for the cost estimates will be announced towards the end of next week.

WHO continues to receive reports of rumoured or suspected cases from countries around the world and systematic verification of these cases is ongoing. Countries are encouraged to continue engaging in active surveillance and preparedness activities. As of today, no new cases have been confirmed outside of Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, or Sierra Leone.

WHO does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions be applied except in cases where individuals have been confirmed or are suspected of being infected with EVD or where individuals have had contact with cases of EVD. (Contacts do not include properly-protected health-care workers and laboratory staff.) Dennis, the widow of the late Justina Ejelonu, the nurse who attended to the index (first) Patrick Sawyer at the First Consultants Medical Centre, Lagos, and later died of the Ebola Virus Disease contracted during the encounter, has been discharged from the Ebola control and treatment centre in Lagos.

The late nurse?s spouse, who had been under observation as one of the suspected cases, was discharged after testing negative to Ebola following series of tests conducted on him to certify his status.

A source at the treatment centre, told Vanguard that Dennis was discharged, weekend after he was certified Ebola free.

He is the sixth person to be discharged from the Ebola Isolation Centre in Yaba, Lagos...

That's 13 confirmed, 1 probable case, and 1 suspect. 15 suspects have been discarded so far.

I assume the doctor's sister is the suspect case, as the probable case is reported to have died. It is not clear who this person was. Perhaps they are the 14th case originally reported as confirmed? (Update: The probable case is a new fatality in an HCW in Port Harcourt.)

This report reinforces my suspicion that the UNOG report added the 6 deaths (including the probable case) to the 13 confirmed and one probable to get a false total of 19 confirmed and one probable.

Ebola: Three new suspected cases in Port Harcourt

SEPTEMBER 1, 2014

Three people have been taken to the Ebola Virus Disease quarantine centre at Oduoha, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The State Commissioner for Health, Sampson Parker, made this known on Sunday just as the Federal Government said another emergency meeting of the National Council of Health over the EVD would hold in Abuja today. The last meeting took place on August 11, 2014.

Parker, who addressed journalists, said those quarantined were a doctor, a pharmacist and a woman who came into contact with Dr. Iyke Enemuo, who died of the virus in Port Harcourt on August 22.

The pharmacist and the doctor are members of staff of Sam Steel Hospital while the nurse worked at the Good Heart Hospital where Enemuo died...
