Ebola alert in Beni: health authorities deny any confirmed cases and call for calm

Published on: March 12, 2026 at 9:56 pm

Health authorities in the city of Beni, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, denied on Thursday, March 12, rumors circulating on social media about a new case of Ebola virus disease in the Byautu district, stating that no infection has been confirmed at this stage.

“Like you, we were also alerted via social media to a suspected case of Ebola virus disease in the Byautu neighborhood of the Beu commune, here in the Beni health zone. This is a false alarm. No Ebola outbreak has been identified in Beni,” said Damier Kambale Vyalemene, the supervising nurse in charge of disease surveillance in the Beni health zone, according to ACP.

According to him, the health authorities immediately activated the monitoring system to verify the information.

“We have already deployed all community relays and the local registered nurses are on high alert. So far, nothing is confirmed and we are continuing the investigations,” he added.

Surveillance teams have been mobilized in the reported area and surrounding areas to carry out systematic health monitoring and identify any suspected cases.

Health authorities are urging the public to avoid panic and to await the results of ongoing investigations.

“We ask the population to remain calm and await official communication from the competent authorities after the completion of the entire investigation process,” continued Damier Kambale Vyalemene.

The alert had been relayed earlier by the urban office of civil protection, which had reported the presence of a suspected case in the Byautu district.

“On March 9, around 6 a.m., in the city of Beni, Beu commune, Byautu district, the population reported the presence of a suspected case of Ebola virus in the Beni health zone. Samples were taken and will be analyzed in the laboratory in order to confirm or refute the results,” the civil protection indicated in an alert note.

A weekly report sent to the Beni health zone by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in collaboration with the Provincial Health Directorate and the urban office of civil protection, also mentioned this alert in its point 13.

However, after initial checks, health officials say that no cases of Ebola virus disease have been identified or confirmed in the city of Beni, located in North Kivu province.

Ebola virus disease remains a major concern in the region. During previous outbreaks, particularly between 2018 and 2020, the disease caused more than 5,000 deaths in the areas of Beni, Butembo and Lubero, according to medical sources.

Health authorities assure that they are continuing epidemiological surveillance in order to prevent any possible resurgence of the disease in the region.
