DRC - Viral hemorrhagic fever cases, deaths (including health workers) in Bulape, Kasai province - August 20, 2025 - Ebola Zaire confirmed
Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, September 24, 2025 – Nearly 45,000 doses of the Ebola vaccine are on their way to Kasai province, where UNICEF is stepping up efforts alongside the government and partners to protect children and families from the new outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Since the outbreak was declared on September 5, 47 suspected and confirmed cases have been reported, including 14 in children. Twenty-five people have already died, including 12 children.
“Every dose delivered is one step closer to keeping children and families safe ,” said John Agbor, UNICEF Representative in the DRC.“Vaccines are one of the most effective tools in the government’s fight to stop Ebola, but children also need medical care if they become ill, support to overcome trauma, safe spaces to learn and play, and guidance for families on how to protect themselves from the disease.”
The current outbreak is in Bulape, but the neighboring areas of Mweka and Mushenge are also at risk. More than 1,048 people who have been in contact with the infected have already been identified and are under surveillance.
Vaccination, care and prevention at the heart of UNICEF's response
UNICEF teams are working around the clock in Kasai, working with the Ministry of Health, other UN agencies, and local partners. More than 20,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine have already arrived in the Kasai region, as the vaccination campaign for frontline health workers and those most at risk ramps up . UNICEF is ensuring that the cold chain is maintained during transport to ensure the effectiveness of each dose.
Beyond vaccines, UNICEF is also supporting the care of Ebola patients, strengthening hygiene measures in schools, hospitals, and child-friendly spaces, and ensuring families receive critical information on how to protect themselves. Specialized teams are also providing psychosocial support and protection services for children affected by the disease.
This is the sixteenth Ebola outbreak in the DRC since the virus was discovered in 1976. The last outbreak in the Kasai region was in 2008-2009. It is one of the most fragile regions in the country, characterized by a weak health system, limited access to clean water, medicine shortages, and poor hygiene conditions, further weakening the families who live there.
“Outbreaks like this also remind us of the importance of global prevention, as well as immediate response ,” added John Agbor. “Global solidarity and investment in effective public services and emergency systems will help protect children not only today, but also during the next crisis.”
Data analysis reveals a steady increase in reported alerts over three days (20, 21, and 22/09/2025). The number of reported alerts increased from 3 to 5, and the total number of alerts for the day increased from 16 to 34. There is also an increase in the number of suspected cases sampled (from 12 to 13, then to 8), which may indicate an intensification of investigative efforts. 🔍
Cumulative data show a total of 48 cases of EVD, including 21 confirmed cases and 27 deaths. This represents a high case fatality rate of approximately 56%. 💀
Most cases are concentrated in the Bulape Health Zone (11 confirmed cases, 14 deaths) and Dikolo Health Zone (11 confirmed cases, 14 deaths). Nearly 50% of cases and deaths are reported from the Dikolo Health Area (HA). This suggests that Dikolo could be the main source (HA) of the epidemic in the Bulape Health Zone.
There is a daily trend in confirmed and probable cases in the Bulape Health Zone. The appearance of new cases began on 08/15/2025 and continued until 09/17/2025, illustrating the progression of the epidemic over time. The fluctuation in the number of daily cases indicates that the epidemic is not yet under control, but that response efforts are underway.
The case fatality rate remains worrying, highlighting the urgency of strengthening response measures.

Ebola-Kasai: 42 deaths recorded in the Bulape health zone (Daily Surveillance Bulletin)
September 27, 2025
Tshikapa, September 27, 2025 (ACP).- Forty-two (42) deaths due to the Ebola virus disease have been recorded in the Bulape health zone, in Kasai, central Democratic Republic of Congo, according to updated data from the Provincial Health Division (DPS), provided on Saturday by the surveillance team, the ACP learned on Saturday from this team.
" A total of 64 cases of Ebola virus disease, including 53 confirmed positive and 11 probable, have been recorded up to Friday, September 26, 2025. Among the recorded cases, there are 42 deaths, including 31 among confirmed cases, representing an overall fatality rate of 66.63%, and 58.49% specifically among confirmed cases ," said Bazin Pembe, Minister of Communication and Media in Kasai, quoted in the daily surveillance bulletin .
He continued: " The health areas of Bulape and Dikole are the most affected, with 25 cases each respectively. Bulape has 19 deaths (68.75% case fatality rate among those confirmed), while Dikole has 15 deaths (58.33%). The situation is particularly critical in the health area of Bulape Community, where the 5 identified cases have all succumbed, thus showing a case fatality rate of 100 percent ," he said.
The health areas of Mpianga and Ingongo report cases with very few or no deaths, reflecting a less alarming development in these areas.
In Mweka territory, several activities are planned by surveillance teams, including monitoring the dissemination of messages on the prevention of Ebola virus disease (EVD) and the prohibition of self-medication in case of illness. Ebola is a zoonosis that is transmitted from animals to humans. ACP/UKB
The Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues, with signs of a notable decline in transmission. Since our last update (Situation Report #2), a total of seven new cases have been reported, comprising six confirmed and one probable cases (retrospectively validated). The new cases were detected across three health areas within Bulape Health Zone, namely, Bulape (n=4), Mpianga (n=2), and Dikolo (n=1). During the same reporting period, seven deaths occurred among newly identified and previously hospitalized cases. The reported deaths were distributed across Dikolo (n=3), Bulape (n=2), Mpianga (n=1), and Bulape Communitaire (n=1) health areas.
As of 28 September 2025, a total of 64 cases (53 confirmed and 11 probable), including 42 deaths (31 confirmed, 11 probable), have been reported from Bulape Health Zone, Kasai Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The overall case fatality ratio (CFR) is 65.6%. Cumulatively, five confirmed cases have been reported among healthcare workers, including three deaths. The outbreak remains confined to six affected health areas out of the 21 that make up Bulape Health Zone.
Cases to date range in age from 0 (newborn) to 65 years. Since the onset of the outbreak, the majority of cases have been reported among females (57.8%, n=37), children aged 0–9 years (25.0%, n=16), and individuals aged 20–29 years (23.4%, n=15). Mortality has also been concentrated among these groups, with females accounting for over half of the reported deaths (57.1%, n=24) and children under 10 years representing 31.0% of deaths (n=13). The CFR is slightly higher among males (66.7%) compared to females (64.9%). In the past two weeks, fewer cases (n = 2) have been reported among children (0-9 years old). A decreasing CFR trend has been observed over time with improvement in surveillance (early case detection and isolation) and the quality of case management (prompt and high-quality treatment).
Kasai-Ebola: 27 alerts and eight alive evacuated from the treatment center in Bulape
September 30, 2025
Tshikapa, September 30, 2025 (ACP).- Twenty-seven new alerts or suspected cases of Ebola, including two deaths and eight recoveries, have been reported until September 29, 2025, at the Ebola treatment center in the Bulapé health zone, in Kasai, in the center of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the ACP learned Tuesday from an official source.
" Until September 29, 2025, we have reported 2 new cases of death, 27 new alerts, 28 alive, including 8 evacuated from the epidemic treatment center (5 in Bulape, 1 isolated in Mpianga, 1 in Ingongo) as well as 8 in the process of evacuation ," said Bazin Mbempe, provincial minister of communication and media.
According to Mr. Mbempe, the technical teams are considering training service providers on the collection, reporting and contact tracing of Ebola virus disease cases, to intensify the eradication of the virus.
"The providers on the ground are currently using the camp approach. In Katshibi, of the 193 people who came out of the bush, all from Bulapé, only 84 were vaccinated against the Ebola virus," he continued.
The provincial Minister of Communication and Media stressed that the situation is particularly critical in the Bulape community health area, where the identified cases show a case fatality rate of 100%. On the ground, the relaxation of barrier measures is noted as the main cause of the increased rate of spread of the virus. ACP/ODM
WHO Director-General's opening remarks at the media briefing – 2 October 2025
2 October 2025
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening.
It’s now been one month since the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola virus disease near the town of Bulape, in the centre of the country.
So far, 64 confirmed and probable cases, including 42 deaths, have been reported.
Nine people have recovered and been discharged, and 13 others are currently being treated.
We have now had five days without any new reported cases, which is good news, but more than 1800 contacts are still being monitored.
The area in which the outbreak is occurring is very remote, which is helping to contain it, but also makes the response very difficult logistically.
For example, WHO has had to build 2.5 kilometres of pipes in order to supply the area with water.
We have also equipped the Ebola treatment centres with oxygen concentrators, which can be a life-saving treatment for the most sick.
Prior to this outbreak, health centres in the area had no access to concentrated oxygen.
This week, WHO published our Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan, with an appeal for US$ 66.6 million to support WHO and our coalition of partners in implementing the National Response Plan.
Once again, I congratulate the government for its response to this outbreak, and its leadership.
