Residents On Edge As Uganda Reports Ebola Cases In Kampala

    By Grace Matsiko
    October 24, 2022
Uganda has reported 14 confirmed cases of Ebola in the greater Kampala region, the country's health minister said Monday, but sought to assure anxious residents that the situation in the capital was under control
    .

So far, the death toll across the country from the Ebola epidemic declared in late September has climbed to 44, according to World Health Organisation figures issued last week.

Uganda's health ministry meanwhile says there have been 90 confirmed cases overall, and 28 deaths.
    ....

Of the nine, she said those infected included seven family members from Masanafu, a densely populated slum area in Kampala which lies near the Kasubi royal tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and not far from two of Uganda's two main private universities.

President Yoweri Museveni earlier this month ordered Kassanda and Mubende, the epicentre of the outbreak, to be put under lockdown, imposing a travel ban, a curfew and the closure of public places.

But Aceng told AFP Monday: "The situation in Kampala is still under control and (there is) no need to restrict people's movements."

..."It is getting scarier now that Kampala is recording Ebola cases," said Rebecca Nanyonga, a 27-year-old mother of two.

"The government has not done much to sensitise Kampala residents on Ebola," she said. "Parties and music concerts are still held yet the disease is in our midst."..

Panic as Ebola patient escapes from Mubende hospital

      October 23, 2022

...According to Dr. Siraji, information from the Ministry of Health indicates that the suspect, a resident of Kapchorwa district was an attendant to a patient who succumbed to Ebola in Mubende hospital recently.

He says the district health office has tasked different stakeholders to join in the search for the patient.

“I received a mail from the Ministry of Health, instructing the district to be on alert and search for the suspect,” Dr. Siraj Masai said...https://www.dispatch.ug/2022/10/23/p...ende-hospital/

Ebola infections take hold in Uganda’s capital Kampala

          Benjamin Mateus

After assuring the press last week that Uganda’s densely populated capital remained Ebola-free and that the outbreak would be rolled back and wiped out by the year’s end, Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng tweeted on Monday that the case count in Kampala had risen sharply to 14 afte....

....According to the Ugandan independent daily newspaper The Daily Monitor, cumulative confirmed cases have reached 84 in the country as of October 24, 2022. Adding the probable cases raises the figure to over 90 cases since the declaration of the outbreak on September 20.

As for the death toll, there have been at least 44 fatalities (28 confirmed), bringing the case fatality rate of confirmed cases between 30 to 50 percent. Among recent deaths is another health care worker, Dr. John Grace Walugembe, a laboratory technician at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, who died last Sunday, raising the number of medical personnel succumbing to the Ebola infection to five.

Twenty-six people, including six health care workers, have recovered and have been discharged. However, the number of contacts has risen to at least 2,007 individuals, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Of these, 931 (46 percent) have completed the 21 days of follow-up, the incubation time for Ebola infection.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that at least eight confirmed Ebola cases have no known links with current cases. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters, “We remain concerned that there may be more chains of transmission and more contacts than we know about in the affected communities.”....

The recent report of a confirmed Ebola infection in a female patient who fell ill and was being treated at a hospital in Mityana district, east of Kassanda, exemplifies the concerns raised by the WHO on the complex chains of infection. The patient’s mother had died a week prior inside a shrine and was buried in the Madudu subcounty in Mubende district. The infected woman’s child had also recently passed away at Manyi health center in Mityana district, raising suspicions of Ebola. The health workers who were in attendance have been isolated while health authorities attempt to trace all the contacts of this particular case....

Additionally, the recognition of Ebola cases in Kampala has raised the dial on the ECDC’s risk assessment for the European Union (EU) citizens living and traveling in the country. Before cases were confirmed in Kampala, they wrote that the current risk remains low in “the absence of transmission in densely populated areas (e.g., the capital city of Kampala).” They added, however, a cautionary note, “An increase in cases and, most importantly, the occurrence of chains of transmissions in populated areas and cities … would increase the likelihood of exposure of EU/EEA [European Economic Activity] citizens to Ebola virus.”...https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/202...

Suvarnabhumi screening arrivals from DR Congo for Ebola

                    MONDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2022

Suvarnabhumi Airport has begun screening arrivals from DR Congo for symptoms of Ebola after the deadly virus began spreading from neighbouring Uganda.

All foreign arrivals who have been to DR Congo in the past 21 days must undergo thermal scanning and provide their travel history and their address and telephone number in Thailand. They will receive a health beware card for self-monitoring that contains contact numbers in case of emergency.

Suvarnabhumi is screening DR Congo arrivals for symptoms of body temperature over 38 degrees Celsius, fever, headache, muscle ache, sore throat, fatigue or a history of potential exposure to infected cases. Travellers who display these symptoms will be tested, monitored, or sent to Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute in Bangkok, according to the Disease Control Department....https://www.nationmultimedia.com/tha...neral/40021350

Health Alert – Update on Ebola Situation

                          Location: Uganda

Event: As of October 25, 2022, the Uganda Ministry of Health (MoH) has reported 95 confirmed Sudan Ebolavirus (SUDV) cases, 28 confirmed deaths and 34 recoveries. On October 16, 2022, President Yoweri Museveni declared a three-week lockdown in Mubende and Kassanda districts in an effort to contain the spread of the current outbreak of SUDV. The Ministry of Health and partners in Uganda are implementing multiple interventions in affected and surrounding districts in order to contain and control the spread of the disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that as of October 11, 2022, the United States would re-direct all U.S.-bound travelers who traveled from or were present in Uganda in the previous 21 days to five U.S. airports for health screening.

                          Actions to take:
                          • Monitor U.S. Embassy Kampala, Uganda’s public messaging regarding the outbreak of SUDV in Uganda here: https://ug.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen...l-information/
                          • Review the U.S. CDC’s Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Uganda: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices...bola-in-uganda
                          • Find more information about Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) on https://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/
                          • Monitor the Government of Uganda’s Ministry of Health website and twitter account for latest Ebola updates and guidance on movement restrictions
                          • Avoid contact with dead bodies, blood, and other body fluids from people who are symptomatic or from contaminated surfaces. A person can only spread Ebola to other people after they develop signs and symptoms of Ebola (e.g., fever, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, and abdominal pain)
                          • Avoid contact with bats, forest antelopes, and non-human primates and raw meat prepared from these or unknown animals (bushmeat)
                          • Defer non-essential travel to Mubende and Kassanda districts. If you reside in or must travel through these districts, obey the instructions of Ugandan authorities with regard to measures to control the outbreak.
                          • Be particularly vigilant about potential exposure when accessing health care facilities in Uganda

Uganda Medical Association leader calls for Kampala lockdown

By AT editor - 25 October 2022 at 9:38 pm

The head of the Uganda Medical Association says officials need to consider a lockdown in Kampala as the Ebola case count continues to rise in the capital.

Dr. Samuel Oledo told local media outlets that he fears the worst is yet to come if aggressive measures aren’t taken quickly. The number of Ebola cases in Kampala has risen to 15, adding new infections in just the past 48 hours....

“Kampala should have restriction of movement, let us hold Kampala when it is still early. The earlier we lockdown Kampala the better,” Oledo told KFM radio. “Ugandans are still taking it as something so minor. It is catastrophic that right now, people are not even reporting cases,”...

                              ..
While the Ministry of Health has been successful in identifying cases and monitoring contacts, the response is complicated by people with Ebola exposure who are hiding from authorities and fleeing health centers, as well as those seeking out traditional healers...
