    SATURDAY 31 DECEMBER 2022

In recent weeks, the Kingdom of Morocco has closely followed the development of the Covid-19 pandemic in the People's Republic of China.

As a result, and after regular and direct contacts with the Chinese party, and with the intention of avoiding a new wave of infection in Morocco and all its repercussions, the Moroccan authorities decided to prevent all travelers coming from China, whatever their nationality, from entering the soil of the Kingdom.

This exceptional measure, which will be applied from January 3, 2023 until further notice, does not in any way affect the strong friendship between the two peoples and the strategic partnership between the two countries, to which the Kingdom remains firmly attached.

China/Covid-19: Morocco cautious, but not worried

    Tayeb Hamdi

The measures taken by Morocco, vis-à-vis travelers to China, are precautions dictated by the evolution of the pandemic in this country and the information related to it, indicated, Monday in Rabat, the doctor and researcher in health policies and systems, Tayeb Hamdi.

" The measures taken around the world, including in Morocco, vis-à-vis travelers to China, do not reflect concern, or negative forecasts about the evolution of the COVID 19 pandemic ", assured Mr. Hamdi, in a statement to MAP.

China, a country of one and a half billion people, is experiencing an unprecedented outbreak of the epidemic since the sudden lifting of the severe restrictions hitherto applied under the "Zero COVID" policy, recalled Dr Hamdi, explaining that this decision comes as the country is experiencing a spread of “hyper contagious” variants, mainly BF.7, which is already circulating in many other countries.

The measure is also expected to speed up the resumption of Chinese outbound travel after the lifting of the restrictive measures, he added.

“ The rapid and large-scale spread of a virus generally facilitates the emergence of mutations and variants, but the world, which is certain of this eventuality, fears rather that one of these variants is more virulent than those currently in circulation. on the planet ,” dreaded the researcher.

The WHO on Friday (December 30th) urged China to share real-time data on the evolution of the epidemic, including data on sequences, hospitalizations and deaths, essential tools for timely detection of the emergence of new variants and the degree of their virulence.

In the absence of this real-time data, continued Tayeb Hamdi, States have decided on measures vis-à-vis travel to and from China to, on the one hand, limit the risk of propagation of a possible variant more virulent without the knowledge of the world health authorities, and on the other hand, to follow through systematic or random PCR samples on travelers coming from China, the genomic evolution of the epidemic.

And to affirm that Morocco, in accordance with its preventive and anticipatory policy, has decided to prohibit as a precaution access to its territory to all travelers, whatever their nationality, from China, explaining that this The decision was taken after the WHO confirmed the insufficient data shared by China about the evolution of the epidemic after the end of the "Zero COVID" policy.

" Instead of relying on individual responsibility alone to monitor the epidemic locally, Morocco has taken, as usual, since the start of the pandemic, a collective and anticipatory measure, while waiting for more data " , explained the doctor, emphasizing that the variants can never be stopped within the borders.

The emergence of new variants is "a natural process", he recalled, warning against the emergence of a new variant more virulent than Omicron and, above all, its possible spread at the expense of hyper-contagious variants present, which remains a very low possibility according to the experts, but not impossible.

Thus, continued Dr. Hamdi, all these measures are as a precaution and not a prediction of a negative evolution of the pandemic, indicating that the year 2023 is still more and more foreseen as the year of the end of the pandemic.

Households, businesses and investors in Morocco are called upon to positively develop their plans for 2023 and for the years to come, he also suggested, welcoming "the Moroccan success" in the management of this health crisis. which allows it to ensure continuity of the normality of social and economic life in complete fluidity.

Reports from China indicate that BF.7 is more contagious, with a shorter incubation period and greater ability to infect people who have already had Covid.
