February 7, 2022 – AFROSCREEN: The Pasteur Institute in Bangui confirms the circulation of the Omicron and Delta variants in the Central African Republic🇨🇫

Based on genomic surveillance data, 80 complete sequences of the SARS-CoV-2 genome obtained from 179 samples, the Institut Pasteur in Bangui reports significant circulation of the Omicron variant (72/80 sequences or 90%) against 4/ 80 samples of the Delta variant. The Central African Republic, like some African countries , was shaken by the 3rd wave of the Covid-19 health crisis.

In the context of the Pasteur Network and the role of the Institut Pasteur in Dakar as a regional laboratory for the genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2, the sequencing of 229 samples positive for SARS-CoV-2 from the Republic Central African Republic, takes place at the Institut Pasteur in Dakar. 179 samples have been sequenced and 50 more are in progress.
Out of 179 sequenced samples, 80 complete SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences are overwhelmingly cases of infection with lineage B.1.1.529 (#Omicron ) and its sublineage BA.1 (72/80 i.e. 90%). The #Delta variant ( AY.X subline) is present in 4 samples.

Work is continuing to lead to an exhaustive mapping of the circulating lines in the country, an analysis of the results generated as well as the dissemination of these via the GISAID platform as an African regional hub.

The identification of 2 worrying variants in the Central African Republic is a new point on the situation of the Covid-19 epidemic on the territory and recalls the issues related to sequencing. # AFROSCREEN is implementing a surveillance system in # the Central African Republic , based in particular on significant sequencing capacities and also aimed at comparing data from one country to another.
