By Amina Aouadi June 18, 2024 at 5:31 p.m.
The rural and mountainous regions of Bouinan in the wilaya of Blida are experiencing a situation of maximum alert following the death of at least 40 cows and the recording of other cases of increasing infection , which has sparked the concern of cattle breeders and their fear of the spread of a mysterious epidemic threatening their herds.
Mr. Mohamed Achour, president of the development and progress association in Amroussa, said they informed the relevant authorities as soon as almost daily increases in the number of dead cows were recorded.
He added that the symptoms of the disease manifest as a life-threatening fever and that some breeders have tried to treat the animals to no avail, while veterinarians have not yet been able to determine the source or cause of the disease.
Faced with this situation, teams from the agriculture department took samples from the dead cows to submit them for analysis in a specialized laboratory. Test results are expected today or tomorrow .
Bovine epidemic in Blida: Concern among breeders in the face of a fatal and unknown disease
Preliminary suspicions indicate that the illness may be due to a viral infection transmitted through the air or by contact.
It should be noted that this disease only affected cows , while no cases of infection have been recorded among other livestock.
While awaiting the results of the analyses, the competent authorities have given advice to breeders and cow owners on the need to respect hygiene measures to limit the spread of the disease. They also requested an accurate census of the number of cows affected.
On the other hand, Ms. Hjira Belarbi, spokesperson for the Directorate of Agriculture, confirmed that a large cow vaccination campaign was launched before the Eid al-Adha holiday and is still ongoing.
The source of this mysterious disease and the means to combat it remain an unsolved mystery. Cow breeders, who constitute one of the main suppliers to the cow's milk market in Bouinan, are impatiently awaiting the results of the analyzes to know the type of disease and take the necessary measures to protect their herds.
