  • Wisconsin admits 1st patient to field hospital on 10/22

    October 22, 2020
90% ICU beds are full in some areas of the state

Wisconsin admitted its first patient to a field hospital in the Wisconsin State Fair Park, near Milwaukee, on Wednesday, the same day that the state reported a record 48 deaths from the novel coronavirus.

The field hospital, a 530-bed facility which opened last week, is meant to relieve pressure on local hospitals, which have been rapidly filling with COVID-19 patients as Wisconsin's outbreak worsens. In some areas, 90% of ICU beds are full, according to the governor's office.

More than 200,000 people in Wisconsin have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic

The number of people hospitalized with the virus in the state reached a high of 1,350 patients, including 329 people in intensive care units. It is more than four times the number of coronavirus patients two months ago, just before cases began surging in Wisconsin.
The field hospital at State Fair Park was treating four patients Monday, according to the state. Known as an alternate care facility, it is intended to free up bed space at strained hospitals and treat coronavirus patients who need a lower level of hospital care.
