Emergency Operations Center Situation Report #18 - Haiti Earthquake


GENERAL OVERVIEW

• The Ministry of Health, with support from PAHO/WHO, UNICEF and non-governmental partners, began a targeted immunization campaign on Tuesday, focusing on populations in temporary settlements. The immunization campaign includes rubella and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccines for children under 7 years of age and diphtheria and tetanus for older children and adults.
• The World Food Programme has distributed food to approximately 750,000 people, including at least 48 orphanages and hospitals.
• Sanitation is a major priority for the WASH cluster and they report that over 7,000 latrines are needed to prevent the spread of disease.
• As mentioned in previous reports, the number of treated trauma injuries continues to decline. According to reports from MSF, more children are suffering from diarrheal disease and people are beginning to present physical symptoms of mental trauma.

PAHO/WHO RESPONSE

• PAHO/WHO has created an online volunteer registry to capture contact data, experience, skills, availability, etc. of persons interested in volunteering for Haiti. Priority is given to the following areas: public health, medicine and/or disaster management and candidates must be fluent in French. Creole is an asset. Each volunteer is asked to complete the registration process at (LINK). Information is circulated among the many agencies who are collaborating in Haiti and if a volunteer?s experience and skills match an identified need, s/he may be contacted to provide support. • Forty-five inter-agency emergency kits (IEHKs) are now in the Dominican Republic?five will remain in the Dominican Republic and 40 are awaiting transport to PROMESS in Haiti. The comprehensive IEHK contains medicines to treat 10,000 patients for three months for common diseases.
• PAHO/WHO has begun an assessment of major health facilities in Port-au-Prince affected by the earthquake. These facilities are the General Hospital (HUEH, 700 camas), L? Hopital de la Paix/Universitarios (100 camas) and the OB/GYN Center Isaie Jeanty-Leon Audain (70 camas). The assessment is looking at medical equipment available in these facilities and whether or not it is in working condition. The assessment will make technical recommendations as to whether to rehabilitate damaged equipment or procure new. The final report of this assessment mission should be ready at the end of this week.
• PAHO/WHO coordination of recent deployments includes five nurses from Panama, specializing in hospital management, rehabilitation, chronic care, and trauma and burns, who began working in Jiman?; Argentina?s national rehabilitation service, which is sending a specialized group of health professionals to Jimani to assist those needing post-operative care and a USAID team of pharmacists who are supporting activities in PROMESS. LSS/SUMA, the Logistics Supply Management System, is set up in Jimani, Dominican Republic, and has reported that in this one location alone, between 22-31 January, they classified and organized more than 400 tons of humanitarian supplies. These have been distributed to hospitals along the border areas:

  • Hospital General Provincial Jaime Mota (Barahona)

• Additionally, LSS/SUMA has helped ensure the availability of donated essential drugs and medical supplies shipped from Santo Domingo to PROMESS.
