Re: Haiti - Daily MOH cholera reports: strange reduction in fatalities

A closer examination of fatality figures for Grande Anse reveals a large jump in the figures for Dec 1. On Nov 30, a cumulative total of 6 fatalities were recorded ? One a child under 5, all were institutional fatalities. On Dec 1, This cumulative number jumped by 94 to 100. One institutional fatality of someone aged 5+ was recorded for the day. The other 93 fatalities appear to be an addition of previously unrecorded fatalities. This periodic increase has also occurred in other regions - see the numbers for the South East Dec 3,4,5 and the South Dec 5,6 and elsewhere, but not on this scale.

The other 93 fatalities added for Grande Anse on Dec 1 were categorized as follows; 21 children under 5 ? 2 institutional fatalities and 19 community fatalities; 72 individuals over 5 ? 38 institutional and 34 community fatalities.
In the process the recorded mortality figure went from a middle of the pack 8.8% to a whopping 62.4%

By December 14th, the total number of fatalities recorded in Grande Anse had increased to 189. The region?s hospital mortality rate was recorded as 15.6%, almost 3 times higher than any other region. The overall mortality was given as 27.6%, double any other region.

On December 15th the fatality total was given as 93 (with 3 fatalities occurring on that day, all institutional, all aged above 5), a reduction of 99 fatalities.

        The changes occurred as follows;

The number of fatalities in children under 5 changed from 33 total (8 institutional and 25 community) to 10 total (5 institutional and 5 community)

The number of fatalities of individuals aged above 5 changed from 159 total (96 institutional and 63 community) to 83 total (61 institutional and 22 community)

In the process, the hospital mortality figure dropped to 7.6% and overall mortality to 9.7%.

61 of the dropped fatalities were categorized as community fatalities.

Perhaps this was an accounting error, or perhaps this is an indication that many fatalities that are suspected, but unconfirmed as cholera are not included in the official counts. Given the lack of an official explanation, we are left with speculation.

Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : At Grand'Anse the epidemic worsens...

          <TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=left><TBODY><TR><TD></TD><TD></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

In Grande Anse, rural department in the Southwest, MdM has set up two Cholera Treatment Centres (CTC) of a capacity of 120 patients in J?r?mie,of 50 beds in Moron and 20 beds in Pr?vil?. Since November 22, these two centers have admitted more than 2,600 cases with an average of 80 new cases per day and recorded 84 deaths. Faced to the constant progression of the epidemic, MdM has also set up 3 transitional units of cholera treatment (UTC) in other communes of the Grande Anse. The teams will support moderate cases, by oral or intravenous rehydration, depending of the degree of dehydration, severe cases are transfered to the CTC.

"The epidemic is getting worse. We receive each day more and more cases. The treatment center of J?r?mie is overwhelmed, some patients are two by bed or placed on the floor," says Myriam Pomarel, medical coordinator for Medecins du Monde.

Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : The MSPP hides the truth to the people

            22/12/2010

Last cholera assessment: Since the beginning of the epidemic of cholera in the country (October 19, 2010), 121.518 people were infected and treated, 63.711 people were hospitalized and 2.591 people died. According to the most recent assessment of MSPP, dated of December 17, 2010. Note that these figures are grossly underestimated by the government, according to health experts from the UN, who believe that these figures could be double those released.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the donor are not sufficiently mobilized. Of the 174 million [call for emergency funds from the UN] only 44 million (25&#37 have been received so far. "In the Northwest we need actors who work in the field of water and sanitation in rural areas, and in particular to disinfect water.

At least 2 million water purification tablets, 1000 boxes of soap, 800 kilos of chlorine powder, are required immediately and urgently in the department of South-East. In the west is the problem of the management of bodies and corpses which is problematic because it is necessary to identify sites where we are going to bury them, in a completely safe way, and we also have a problem to transport water in particular because now there is a lack of funding. So for the activities of transporting water by truck in Port-au-Prince we lack of funding and again it is a problem..." resumed Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for OCHA.

For several weeks, the Haitian authorities gives false indicators to the population, suggesting that in the Department of the West (Port-au-Prince, Carrefour, Cit&#233; Soleil, Delmas, Kenscoff, P&#233;tion Ville, and Tabarre) the situation is stabilizes in Port-au-Prince and in the Artibonite. We denounce the manipulation of figures from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP). The Department publishes reports where overall mortality (hospital and community) in the West continues to decline to the lowest level of the country, in an area that represents more than 40% of the population (!).

To reach this result, the MSPP does not record (among others) the death in the communities. Thus, between November 9, 2010 and December 17, 2010 there, reading the official report that the number of deaths in the community (Port-au-Prince and metropolitan area) has increased from 6 dead to 9 dead, either 3 more deaths in 38 days, while at the same time, the mortality, in hospital and/or in the Cholera Treatment Center (CTC) for this area increased from 4 to 232 dead.

Another example for the entire Grand'Anse Department, the Government indicates 1.045 cases hospitalized since the epidemic began, while for the only NGO M&#233;decins du Monde (MDM), the number of cases since November 22 ,and for the two centers under its control, is of 2,600 cases.

Even if the MSPP indicates that its data for Grand'Anse are partial due to the time of collection (48 to 72 hours) this can not be explained by this reason alone. Further, the analysis of official reports of MSPP offer many other examples of numbers that do not correspond to the magnitude of the epidemic and which masks the reality of the situation to the people of Haiti.

Contradicting the messages of improvement from the Haitian health authority the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said on December 21, 2010, an increase in the number of cholera cases in Artibonite and the Department of the West where there is a lack of water and good sanitation and hygiene. The department of Grande Anse has an urgent need of ambulances, only one is available to transport patients to the entire department.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized, Friday, December 17 that the cholera outbreak could not be stopped in the short term.

Back in Switzerland, Tuesday night from a mission in Haiti of three weeks for the Swiss Red Cross, in Grand Goave in the west, where he was involved with Medecins du Monde in the establishment of a cholera treatment center (CTC), Martin Weber, a specialist in tropical diseases provides that "the disease kills much more than it is said" according to him that "published figures are completely undervalued. I think we can easily multiply by ten the number of victims of the epidemic".

Re: Haiti - Daily MOH cholera reports- Numbers are questioned

              Updated to Dec 18; http://www.mspp.gouv.ht/site/downloa...bre%202010.pdf

              Total deaths 2,707

              Hospitalisations 68,764

              Total cases 128,251

This represents an increase of 116 fatalities over the Dec 17 report, but the daily tally is given as 44.

The Grande Anse number has increased by 51 of whom only 2 were on the day. 43 were institutional, 8 were community. Ouest added 11 institutional fatalities of which only one occurred on the 18th. Port-au-Prince increased by 16, 4 of which occurred on the 18th.

Re: Haiti - Daily MOH cholera reports- Numbers are questioned, official total 2707 fatalities

The newssource Haiti Libre seems to be almost the only one who is analyzing the cholera epidemic in Haiti. WHO? UN? PAHO?

Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : The descent into hell ?

                27/12/2010

Last cholera assessment: Since the beginning of the epidemic of cholera in the country (October 19, 2010), 128.251 people were infected and treated, 68,764 people were hospitalized and 2,707 people died. According to the latest report from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), dated of December 18, 2010.

Between the report published on December 17 and that of December 18 by the MSPP:

The number of people infected increased by 6.733 + cases (1 case every 12 seconds)
The number of people hospitalized from + 5.328 (one every 17 seconds)
The number of deaths + 116 (1 death every 12 minutes 24 seconds)

Between these two days the assessment exploded (between the 17 and 18 +6733 cases) compared to the previous days:
                between the 16 and the 17 : +1,755
                between the 15 and the 16 : +2,183
                between the 14 and the 15 : +3,083

We may partly explain this significant increase by:

The adjustment of the figures of Grand'Anse which between December 17 and 18 increased from 1.161 to 2.986 cases (cases +1.825 +287&#37 data still incomplete according to the assessment of the the Ministry.

Those of Port-au-Prince between December 17 and 18 which went from 19.585 to 20.853 cases (+1.268 cases)

Please note that this increase for this period is very unusual because it is 36 times greater than the difference of the figures of the day before

                between the 17 and the 18 : +1,268
                between the 16 and the 17 : +35
                between the 15 and the 16 : +69

                Children (Cumulative figures):
ince the beginning of the epidemic and the latest assessment dated of December 18 :

9.56% of those infected were children under 5 years
7.74% of those hospitalized were children under 5 years
6.64% of those who died were children under 5 years

This percentage is unfortunately less than reality, but the MSPP does not know the distinct number, because the the Ministry treats children over 5 years in adults.

Note that these figures are grossly underestimated by the government, according to health experts from the UN, who believe that these figures could be double those released.

Comment from Haiti Libre; they point out the data on cholera in the capital Port-au-Prince are totally unbelievable.

                        Port-au-Prince :
Figures of Port au Prince are unusable because the MSPP do not record any death since December 18 in the the department most populous of the country... both hospital and community.

At the community level the figures of the dead were never taken into account in their assessment, which allows the Government to present an assessment of the lowest mortality rate of the country for this Department...

                          Spanish to English translation
Puerto Principe, Dec 31 (Prensa Latina)

Haitian health authorities reported 140 new deaths from cholera, bringing two thousand 901 total deaths from this cause.

According to a report by the Ministry of Public Health and Population, until December 20 the epidemic affected 134 thousand 678 people.

The bulletin confirms that 73 thousand 853 patients were hospitalized and 989 thousand now remain in institutions.

Artibonite region remains the most damage with 818 deaths from the disease, which spread across the 10 departments in Haiti and moved to the Dominican Republic, where he recorded 120 infections.

Authorities say the mismanagement of the bodies as one of the biggest problems in fighting the epidemic.

According to the online journal Free Haiti, Les Cayes in places like the bodies remain in clinics and health centers over a week because people refuse to bury them in mass graves. Meanwhile, continued international aid, but is insufficient given the health emergency.

Since 16 December were distributed 348 metric tons of medical supplies in several regions, according to the newspaper.

The international medical presence is also considerable, especially the Cuban brigade that has served more than 40 percent of those affected with a mortality rate of less than one percent.
