Haiti: Cholera deaths are due to rains and neglect
Puerto Principe, Jun 1 (Prensa Latina) Haitian Health Ministry acknowledged today that the increase in deaths from cholera in the capital in recent days due to neglect of that institution in disease control.
"There is an outbreak caused by streams of the rainy season, but also by reducing the monitoring of hygiene standards," admitted the owner of the field, Gabriel Timoth?e, who confirmed at least 10 deaths in recent days.
According to the Minister a thousand people contracted the disease recently, mainly in towns south of Port au Prince.
We have seen a dozen dead and a thousand people were hospitalized in Carrefour, said, but other outbreaks were reported in Gressier (southern suburbs), and in Petit-Goave (southwest).
Timoth?e reported that mobile teams working in these regions and conducting an epidemiological study to understand the behavior of the virus.
The Ministry notified in late May this year the death of over five thousand 300 people and the spread of other 315 000, although local media multiply the number after the rains in recent days.
Wednesday despite the start of hurricane season, the debris still on the streets of Haiti, garbage filled the corners, much of the infrastructure remains destroyed and 680 000 people lost their homes are no where to go.

GENEVA ? More than 18,000 new cases of cholera have been recorded in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince since early May, the World Health Organisation said Friday.
The bacterial infection has already killed 5,397 people in the troubled nation...
