6 chickens confirmed with highly pathogenic flu virus in Miyazaki

MIYAZAKI (Kyodo) -- Six chickens have been confirmed infected with a highly pathogenic avian flu virus at a poultry farm in Miyazaki City where dozens of birds were found dead, the Miyazaki prefectural government said Saturday, prompting the central government to convene a task force meeting.

The outbreak is the second at a poultry farm in Japan over the autumn and winter season following one in November in Shimane Prefecture, while wild and free-range birds have been found infected with the highly virulent H5N1 bird flu in Hokkaido and Tottori, Kagoshima and Fukushima prefectures since October.

The discovery in Miyazaki is yet another blow to the livestock industry of the southwestern prefecture, which was hit by bird flu in 2007 and a foot-and-mouth epidemic last year that led to the slaughter of about 290,000 cows and pigs.

Following the confirmation in detailed examinations early Saturday after the chickens tested positive for bird flu in Friday's preliminary tests, prefectural officials and experts began culling all the roughly 10,000 chickens at the farm, according to the local government officials....

    Chicken cull begins in Miyazaki

Municipal workers in Miyazaki Prefecture have begun slaughtering some 10,000 chickens on a poultry farm following an outbreak of bird flu.
The H5 strain of the bird flu virus was detected on Saturday in 6 chickens that were found dead on the farm.

About 200 officials from Miyazaki Prefecture began culling the birds on Saturday morning. The prefecture plans to finish the work within the day, and send a virus sample to the National Institute of Animal Health in Tsukuba, near Tokyo, for further examination including its toxicity level.
The prefecture has banned the transportation of 1.93 million chickens or their eggs at 51 poultry farms within a radius of 10 kilometers from the affected farm...

Another Miyazaki farm turns up bird flu cases

MIYAZAKI (Kyodo) Bird flu appeared to hit another farm Sunday in Miyazaki Prefecture after five of six chickens tested from it yielded positive preliminary readings for a highly pathogenic virus, the prefectural government said.
<!-- MooterMedia Javascript Ad Snippet start -->

<!-- MooterMedia Javascript Ad Snippet end here -->The tests were held after 20 chickens were found dead at a farm in Shintomi, a town close to the city of Miyazaki, where six chickens at a separate farm were confirmed Saturday to have the H5 bird flu strain.
The farm in Shintomi, which raises about 66,000 chickens for eggs, would be the third poultry farm hit in the autumn and winter seasons following one that had to be sterilized in November in Shimane Prefecture, and the one in Miyazaki forced to cull all its roughly 10,000 chickens Saturday.
Miyazaki Prefecture was the nation's No. 2 poultry producer after Kagoshima as of 2009.
The dead chickens discovered at the farm in Shintomi were found in the same poultry house as those it raises for eggs. The farm has around 460,000 chickens in 12 houses.http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-b...0110123x2.html

Japan will cull around 410,000 chickens at a major poultry farm in western Miyazaki prefecture to tackle an outbreak of bird flu, an official said Sunday.

The decision came after about 20 chickens were found dead on Sunday morning at the farm.

Authorities decided to slaughter all the birds kept in the complex to prevent a wider outbreak, a farm ministry official said.

The complex is located a few kilometres from another farm where the slaughter of around 10,000 chickens is already underway.

Miyazaki ups fight against bird flu as it spreads to 2nd farm

MIYAZAKI, Japan (Kyodo) -- The Miyazaki prefectural government stepped up its efforts to fight bird flu Monday after it confirmed infections at a second local poultry farm and began culling about 410,000 chickens there the previous day.

To help prevent a further spread of the highly pathogenic avian flu, it asked the Ground Self-Defense Force for a disaster relief dispatch, and a team of 170 troops were sent from a camp within the southwestern Japan prefecture to help in burying culled chickens and other work from Tuesday...

Bird flu virus identified as highly virulent

Genetic tests have confirmed the bird flu virus detected in chickens at a poultry farm in Miyazaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan last week is a highly toxic strain. It is said to closely resemble the strain found in dead chickens and wild birds in other areas last year.

The agriculture ministry is warning that the virus could be spreading.
An outbreak of bird flu was reported at a poultry farm in Miyazaki City last Friday. Preliminary tests on the virus from dead chickens identified it as the "H5" strain. The ministry sent samples to the National Institute of Animal Health in Tsukuba, near Tokyo, for further examination....

Japan's southwestern prefecture of Miyazaki has finished destroying some 110,000 chickens, about a quarter of those slated for disposal, after workers on the task were more than doubled.
To contain the season's second case of bird flu, the prefecture has targeted about 410,000 chickens for culling in the area where the new outbreak was confirmed on Sunday. But only about 6 percent of the job was complete as of Monday evening....

Miyazaki suspects its 3d case of bird-flu

Preliminary tests show that Miyazaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan may have its 3rd case of bird flu infection at a chicken farm this winter.

Tests conducted by the prefecture turned up infections in chickens found dead after being shipped to a meat processing center from a farm in Tsuno Town....

Farm ministry responding to bird flu outbreak

Japan's agriculture ministry is sending experts to a town in Miyazaki Prefecture to try to determine the route of bird flu infection among chickens raised at a farm there.

Eleven out of 186 dead chickens raised at the farm in the town of Tsuno tested positive for avian flu in a preliminary test.
As a result of the finding, the ministry decided to cull more than 31,000 chickens -- 10,000 at the farm and about 21,000 sent to a meat processing center in another town. The ministry decided to cull them without waiting for a DNA test, and the culling work began Thursday night....
