The Health Ministry Friday announced that a 2-year-old girl from Bac Kan Province was infected with the bird flu.

The girl from the northern province of Bac Kan is the seventh patient to be diagnosed with the flu, the Preventive Health and Environment Department said.

Vietnam has reported two H5N1-related deaths this year, a 38-year-old from the Mekong Delta Tien Giang Province in February and a 3-year-old in Ho Chi Minh City last month.

Bird flu infected five people in Vietnam last year, all of whom died.

Also on Friday, the Animal Health Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said the blue ear disease has recurred in the northern provinces of Thai Binh and Thai Nguyen.

A total of 1,090 pigs in Dong **** District, Thai Binh and 21 in Phu Binh districts in Thai Nguyen Province, have been found with the disease.

In nearby Hai Duong Province, nearly 40 pigs have died of the disease, nine months after the government announced its successfully containment.

In June last year the department said that Vietnam has successfully curbed the spread of the foot-and-mouth disease, bird flu and the blue ear pig diseases.

A 2-year-old girl infected with influenza A/H5N1 in Bac Kan (04/12/2010)

VH-Department of Preventive Medicine and Environment, Ministry of Health said cases of influenza A/H5N1 most recently a 2-year-old girl in Na Tao village, commune such as grass, Cho Moi, Bac Kan province.

This is the first case of influenza A/H5N1 infection in two villages since early this year.Epidemiological investigation showed that, at home and around the area where patients are living with sick poultry phenomenon, died.In particular, the family baby, had to slaughter sick poultry meat.

Another A/H5N1 infection case reported in Bac Kan

Bac Kan province has confirmed a second A/H5N1-infection case in Na Tao hamlet, Nhu Co commune, Cho Moi district.
The patient, Nguyen Thi Thanh Thu, 27, visited a bird flu-infected area four or five days before being diagnosed with the deadly virus.
The healthcare centre in Cho Moi district has reported nine suspected cases, eight of them from Na Tao hamlet. All nine showed symptoms of high fever, breathing difficulty and coughing.
The first A/H5N1 case was detected in Bac Kan on April 5. The patient, Trung Van Hoa, 22, was also from Na Tao hamlet.
At present, local authorities and health agencies are intensifying emergency measures to sterilise infected areas and strictly monitor new outbreaks of the disease.
Cho Moi district has been given 700 doses of Tamiflu vaccine and enough medical equipment to ensure that necessary checkups and treatment can be provided to local patients.

Patient H in posts #42 and #43 refers to Chu Văn Ho? (Trung Van Hoa), the first confirmed individual in the huyện Chợ Mới cluster.

The second individual in the cluster is Nguyễn Thị Thanh Thư (27 months old, see post #1 in this thread). This child is often reported as 2 years old.
