EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

CATTLE OF VARYING AGE GROUPS WITH CLINICAL SIGNS CONSISTENT WITH FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE (FMD) WERE REPORTED IN GONONO VILLAGE IN MBIRE DISTRICT(FORMER GURUVE) ALONG THE MOZAMBICAN BORDER ON THE 18TH OF MAY 2022. ON INVESTIGATING THE SOURCE AND EXTENT OF THE SPREAD OF INFECTION, MORE CATTLE WITH CLINICAL SIGNS OF FMD WERE DETECTED FROM THREE NEIGHBOURING VILLAGES, NAMELY CHIDODO, CHIMOIO AND KAIREZI. THE SOURCE OF INFECTION IS YET TO BE IDENTIFIED. THE DISTRICTS HAVE BEEN PLACED UNDER QUARANTINE WITH CONTROL VACCINATIONS IN PROGRESS. 24HR VETERINARY CHECKPOINTS HAVE BEEN PLACED ON MAJOR ROADS COMING IN OR OUT OF THE DISTRICTS WITH MEETINGS WITH VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS PLANNED. SAMPLES COLLECTED FROM INFECTED ANIMALS TESTED POSITIVE FOR SAT 2 ON SOLID-PHASE ELISA AND EPITHELIAL TISSUES WERE COLLECTED FOR ADVANCED LABORATORY TESTS.
