Zimbabwe: new cholera threat

One of the four suspected cases of cholera reported in Beitbridge has proved positive after laboratory tests, raising fears of another cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe.

Health and Child Welfare Minister, Henry Madzorera confirmed the development but said only one case tested positive while three were negative.

...The Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control in the ministry, Dr Portia Manangazira said the ministry has activated surveillance mechanisms, adding that all suspicious cases of diarrhoea are being sent to the laboratories for confirmation...".

South Africa: Limpopo Cholera Outbreak Under Control

HUMAN Rights Watch warned Tuesday that Harare was at risk of repeating a cholera outbreak five years ago that killed over 4 200 people as the capital?s water crisis continues to worsen.

The group said a long-running sanitation crisis in the city of two million meant drinking water was often taken from wells that were contaminated with sewage from broken pipes...

Zimbabwe: Chiredzi Cholera Outbreak Contained

Government has contained the cholera outbreak in Chiredzi with no new cases recorded since it was first noted, a senior official in the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said. Five cases of cholera were reported in Chiredzi a fortnight ago sparking fears it could spread to other areas.Updating the nation on the situation, provincial medical director for Masvingo Dr Robert Mudyarandima said: "We treated water sources believed to have caused the outbreak and a surveillance team was sent to offer medical assistance to other cholera victims at home as other people neglect to seek treatment."...
