New cholera outbreak in eastern Zimbabwe kills 16, sickens hundreds

HARARE (BNO NEWS) -- At least 16 people have been killed and hundreds more are ill after a fresh cholera outbreak in eastern Zimbabwe, according to state-run media on Monday.

The state-controlled Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation reported that the epicenter of the latest cholera outbreak is in Marange District of Manicaland Province, killing at least sixteen people since October.

"Thirteen were community deaths where the people died at their homes and 3 were institutional deaths," said Zimbabwean Deputy Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Douglas Mombeshora.

Mombeshora said another 669 people are suspected to be suffering from cholera, while 86 others are confirmed to have cholera. Most of the cases are reportedly linked to illegal diamond mining activities in Chiadzwa, where miners live in unhygienic conditions.

The new outbreak comes only months after most of the country's ongoing cholera epidemic appeared to have passed. The epidemic, which began in August 2008, killed at least 4,300 people and sickened up to 100,000 others.

18 out of the 62 districts in the country were affected by the cholera outbreak that occurred from 4 February to 24 October 2010. One district Makonde has been affected by a new outbreak that started in week 47. During the same period in 2009 54 districts had been affected. 797 cumulative cholera cases consisting of 688 suspect cases, 109 laboratory confirmed cases and 21 deaths had been reported by the 28th Novemctober
2010 to the World Health Organization (WHO) through the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare's (MoHCW) National Health Information Unit. The crude case fatality rate was 2.7% which is 1.6% lower than that of 2009. By week 47 2009, 98 522 cumulative cases and 4 282 deaths had been reported since August 2008, with the crude case fatality rate of 4.3%.

Week 47 (22 -28 November 2010)
After four weeks of no cases being reported there was a resurgence of cholera in week 47 with 7 new cholera cases were reported.
Geographical distribution of cases
The cases between 4 February and 24 October were reported came from the following districts: Beitbridge, Bindura, Buhera, Chegutu, Chivi, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chiredzi, Harare, Hurungwe, Kadoma, Masvingo, Makonde, Mt. Darwin, Mutare, Mwenezi, Plumtree and UMP.

Urban/Rural distribution of cases
72% of the cases between 4 February and 24 October were reported from rural areas. In comparison, during the corresponding week in 2009, 67 % of the cases were from rural areas.

Mbare- IN a case of suspected cholera outbreak, nearly 20 families have experienced severe diarrhoea and fears continue to mount over the quality of water they have been drinking. In a brief interview with the Chairman of the HRT Majubeki Residents? Committee, Samuel Mapurisa said residents have been taken to the local clinic suffering from severe stomach aches, diarrhoea and vomiting in what they suspect to be a repeat of the 2008 cholera outbreak that killed nearly 4 000 people in Zimbabwe, mainly in Harare?s Budiriro suburb.
Mapurisa said they have received a rapid increase in the reports from alarmed residents since last Saturday who feel their health is at risk if nothing is done urgently to investigate and deal with the unravelling crisis.
?The water that residents here have been drinking is smelly, and we suspect that the water delivery system has broken down and sewerage is leaking, leading to the contamination of the water....

Cholera outbreak confirmed in Harare suburb

Harare - Authorities in Zimbabwe on Monday confirmed an outbreak of cholera in Mbare, one of Harare's oldest suburbs, with at least 20 households having reportedly been affected.

The report comes amid fears that the disease may be spreading again across the poverty-stricken country.

Portia Munangazira, a doctor and director in Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health, told the German Press Agency dpa Monday that Harare was still struggling to eradicate the pandemic, which claimed over 4,000 lives and affected thousands more nationwide in 2008

Harare City dismisses cholera reports

HARARE City Health Services Department has dismissed some media reports that cases of cholera have been detected in Harare?s Mbare suburbs.

The Department has described reports in a local daily that cases of cholera have been detected in Mbare as false and malicious.

City Health Services Department Director, Dr. Stan Mungofa said no cholera cases have been reported in Mbare, adding that even cases of diarrhea have in fact been on the decline.

?Cholera is characterised by watery diarrhea and if you look at the data provided it is clear that diarrhea cases are on the decrease.

Cholera Outbreak Fears In Gweru

Gweru, January 13, 2011 - There are fears of an outbreak of cholera in Gweru after UNICEF which had been donating water purification chemicals indicated it was pulling out its support.

Mayor Thadeus Chimombe told Radio VOP: "UNICEF has indicated that it will stop supplying us with chemicals beginning this year. We are however still trying to negotiate with them so that they can once again continue assisting us with water treatment chemicals."

The council's director of finance Edgar Mwedzi said the city needed US$ 529 120 a month to procure water chemicals. The council said it is unable to afford it since the bulk of all its revenues go towards payment of wages and salaries.

Zimbabwe records 71 suspected cholera cases in first week of 2011, says WHO

APA-Harare (Zimbabwe) The World Health Organisation said Tuesday that at least 71 suspected cholera cases were reported in four Zimbabwean districts during the first week of 2011, bringing the cumulative tally to more than 1,000 since the outbreak started 13 months ago.

The WHO said in an epidemiological report published jointly with Zimbabwe?s Health Ministry that the largest number of suspected cases was in the eastern border city of Mutare where at least 30 people were treated for the disease.

Situated on the border with Mozambique, Mutare is the provincial town for hundreds of illegal diamond miners extracting diamonds at the controversial Marange fields.

A further 19 cases were reported in President Robert Mugabe?s Zvimba home town, according to WHO.

Other areas affected were Buhera with 13 suspected cases and Bikita in the south of the country which recorded nine cases.

The new cases bring the cumulative total to 1,032, with 22 deaths reported since February 2010 when the outbreak was first reported.

The cholera outbreak has been blamed on the lack of clean water supply and poor sanitation in the affected areas.

Cholera kills two, affects 150 others in Zimbabwe in January-WHO

APA-Harare (Zimbabwe) At least two Zimbabweans have died since the beginning of 2011 from a resurgent cholera outbreak that affected more than 150 people during the first three weeks of the year, the World Health Organisation said Thursday.

The new cases bring to 1,172 the cumulative cases and 25 deaths recorded since the current outbreak started on 4 February 2010.

?150 cumulative cholera cases consisting of 125 suspect cases, 25 laboratory-confirmed cases and two deaths had been reported by the 23rd January 2011 to the World Health Organization through the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare?s National Health Information Unit,? WHO said...

Fears Of Cholera Outbreak In Masvingo

Masvingo, February 26, 2011 - Masvingo has gone for more than three days without water, raising fears of a cholera outbreak.

The town has been dry since Wednesday, forcing residents to fetch water from shallow wells, exposing them to danger of contracting water-borne diseases such as cholera.

An official from the Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association blasted the city fathers for failing to notify residents to explain the problem or at least provide water bowsers.

Cholera has claimed the lives of some 36 people in Manicaland and Masvingo provinces over the past month, say health officials who add that they are still struggling to eradicate the disease in the country following a 2008-2009 epidemic that killed 4,200 people.

Epidemiology and Disease Control Director Portia Manangazira of the Ministry of Health said five people died of cholera in the past week in the Masvingo districts of Chiredzi, Sangewe and Chilonga. Eight died in Rusito district, Manicaland province.

Three people died last week following a fresh outbreak of cholera in Chiredzi?s Sengwe and Chilonga areas, a senior health official told NewsDay.

Masvingo provincial medical director Robert Mudyiradima said two adults and a child died from over 60 cholera cases reported in the area since last week.

?Three people have succumbed to cholera detected in Chiredzi,? Mudyiradima said.

He said the source of the resurgent outbreak was neighbouring Manicaland Province where the disease has been detected in the last few months.

Zimbabwe: Cholera Claims Eight in Chimanimani

EIGHT people, six from the same family, have died of cholera while another eight, all members of the Johanne Marange Apostolic Sect, were hospitalised in Chimanimani.

All the cases were recorded from Rusitu District of Chimanimani, which was hit by a cholera outbreak last month.

Director of Epidemology and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Dr Portia Manangazira said they were continuing dialogue with members of the sect so that they can consider accessing health care facilities.

"We are still making dialogue with members of the Marange Apostolic sect so that they can access treatment at health care facilities," said Dr Manangazira.

She said the 16 cases from Rusitu were detected early in March but were only attended to later in the month as the sect members were allegedly hiding the sick from members of the public.

"People were hidden in the area so they could not receive medical assistance, the matter only came to light late March," said Dr Manangazira.

In a bid to curb cholera and other non-communicable diseases, Government is training rapid response teams to assist in responding to emergency disease outbreaks.

Suspected cholera outbreak in Manicaland

A suspected cholera outbreak has left a three-year-old child dead at a Salvation Army Easter congress at Mubaira business centre in Mhondoro last week.

Munashe Mushaningwe from Watyoka village near Mubaira died early last Monday morning after experiencing severe diarrhoea the previous night.

The other affected church members were taken to Mubaira Rural Hospital while others were rushed to Harare Central Hospital for treatment.

A senior official in the Salvation Army medical fellowship team, Mrs Alice Nleya, confirmed the death, saying the other 85 patients were in stable condition.

Zimbabwe.Chipinge new cholera epicentre
Report?The Zimbabwean ..HARARE - Chipinge is the new epicentre of Zimbabwe?s latest cholera outbreak, according to the latest World Health Organisation epidemiological report. It showed that the eastern Manicaland province accounted for about 95 percent of all incidents reported since the beginning of the year. More than 573 cholera cases had been reported in Chipinge by the end of May, nearly 63 percent of the 936 incidents recorded countrywide since January.

A total of 936 cumulative cholera cases had been reported by the third week of May, a 24 percent rise in the number of cases since the end of April when 755 cases were recorded in 10 of Zimbabwe?s 62 districts. The death toll stood at 25 at the end of April.

At least 886 or 95 percent of the current cases were reported from the eastern Manicaland province which is also home to the controversial Marange fields where artisan miners are digging for alluvial diamonds.

Nine people died recently while 194 were hospitalised following a fresh outbreak of cholera in Chiredzi, a senior provincial health official confirmed yesterday.

Masvingo provincial medical director Robert Mudyiradima told NewsDay yesterday the most affected areas include Lapache, Umbono and Nyahombe in Lowveld district.

He said the latest outbreak, believed to have started in neighbouring Chisumbanje Tea Estates in Manicaland, had left 194 people hospitalised.
?I can confirm the cholera outbreak in Chiredzi, which started in Manicaland. 194 cases have been reported since February, while nine people have died so far,? said Mudyiradima.

Cholera threat remains in Chisumbanje

Chipinge -- More than two years after the cholera outbreak that killed more than 4 000 people across Zimbabwe, the people of Chisumbanje are living in fear of another major outbreak due to a suspect drinking water source and lack of adequate sanitation.

This year, one person is reported to have died and more than 150 people have contracted the disease...
