Fascinating.
It's amazing that this earthquake can be so much stronger that it can have this type of impact, where other earthquakes aren't even close.
Since last December, I'd been watching the seismographs associated with the 5 volcanoes closest to Anchorage, AK. While one was "cooling down", there were 3 others that showed increasing harmonic tremors and definate plate plunging gas-rising small quakes (at about 62 miles depth). After this quake, they all "quieted" down and haven't resumed their pre-Japan activity - yet. My unscientific explanation is that the quake gave everthing a good shake and settled down the subsurface activity - at least temporarily.

Another possibility is the earths crust moved 8 feet to the west thus reducing pressure on the other three compass points......at least for the short time. A tad more disturbing is those oscillations may 'vibrate' another plate already near the breaking point to fracture.

Yes - might that be preceeded by a cluster of earthquakes in areas where that cluster is abnormal?
BTW - how did the Cascades volcanoes and Yellowstone react?

Harmonic tremor and small quakes under both Yellowstone and the Cascade area. Even St. Helens. Mt Baker went active Feb. 27th, I believe. I've been watching it for a while now. The tremor appeared to coincide with the quakes in Japan, but i'm no expert in this area. I have watched the USGS website daily for at least 10 years. All the activity seems to have quieted down in the past couple of days. Here are some great links:
