Cattle disease breaks out in Mumbwa
By CHAMBO NG?UNI
LUMPY skin disease, a cattle ailment which causes lameness, body weakness and miscarriage in cows, has broken out in Mumbwa and at least four animals had by last week died in Senior Chief Shakumbila?s area.
Senior Chief Shakumbila said reports reaching his palace indicate that many areas in Mumbwa have been affected by the animal disease which is caused by lumpy skin virus.
The traditional ruler has since urged Government to quickly control the disease before more animals die, especially that farmers in the chiefdom depend on livestock for their livelihood.
?Villagers here keep cattle for farming and if they lose animals to the disease, even crop production will go down,? he said.
Senior Chief Shakumbila announced the outbreak of the disease at his palace recently when Central Province permanent secretary Edwin Zumbunu paid a courtesy call on him.
He said most farmers cannot afford to buy the medicine needed to treat their animals, the reason why he was making an earnest appeal for Government?s intervention.
