Experts screen NRDC students for mysterious viral disease

By Tilyenji Mwanza | Updated: 12 Nov,2015 ,10:00:00 |

THE Lusaka Province medical office is screening students at the Natural Resources Development College following an outbreak of a suspected viral disease that is causing acute diarrhoea, fever and fainting.

...10 out of 140 students who showed symptoms of the diseases had been admitted to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital for treatment and observation.

Kanyanga added that the results they obtained from Levy Mwanawasa Hospital, in two cases confirmed the presence of sepsis.

?We have been told sepsis is a disease that comes from blood poisoning and it engulfs the red blood cells,? he explained.

Sources at the institution said they suspected that the mysterious disease could have stemmed from the consumption of infected beef.

?...We have had a lot of sick cattle; this week alone, we have lost about seven or eight cows.
...
And Lusaka district health coordinator Dr Gideon Zulu said medical officers were still carrying out tests.

?We are still screening the students, starting with those who are showing serious symptoms. We are not offering health services or giving medication. But we are looking for the cause of the problem. So far, the students have symptoms of cough, fever, fainting, abdominal pains and headaches. We hope to conclude soon,? said Dr Zulu.

Lusaka Province Medical Officer, Kennedy Malama says the disease outbreak at the Natural Resources Development College -NRDC- is a mere flu.

Dr. Malama says all the 78 students that were screened showed signs of flu and have since resumed their daily activities.

He told ZNBC News today that the medical team that was dispatched to the college has also ruled out animal disease outbreak.

Dr. Malama said the Veterinary department which also carried investigations has confirmed that the suspected poisoning is the cause of death for some animals that died at NRDC last week.

He said the medical team has however intensified surveillance at the college.
