KABOMPO district is facing an outbreak of Contagious Bovine Pleuro-Pneumonia, a fatal cattle disease.
Kabompo district veterinary officer Dr Gershom Chungu confirmed in an interview that some samples of blood serum collected from suspected cattle kraals in Dikolong'a and Mumbeji areas tested positive for Contagious Bovine Pleuro-Pneumonia (CBPP) at the Central Veterinary Research Institute in Lusaka...
..."When CBPP, a bacterial disease, is detected in a kraal, the policy is to arrange for a market for the cattle owner to slaughter for sale all the animals in the kraal as a measure of controlling the spread of the disease," Dr Banda said.
He dispelled concerns of people consuming the meat from an cattle affected by CBPP, saying the disease was not zoonotic (not transmitted from animals to humans), adding that the lungs and other infected parts were discarded during meat inspection...
