Zambia Reports First Mpox Case as Infections Across Africa Mount

(Bloomberg) -- Zambia’s Health Ministry confirmed the country’s first diagnosis of Mpox on Thursday as cases in other parts of Africa mount.

The patient was a 32-year old male who had traveled from Tanzania to Zambia, according to a statement from the ministry.​..

Zambia confirmed Friday its second mpox case, nearly three months after reporting the first.

The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that Africa had recorded nearly 14,000 cases, including 60 deaths in 20 countries.

Douglas Syakalima, Zambia’s acting health minister, said the latest case involved a 34-year-old woman from Kitwe in Copperbelt Province. Her husband, who works in a neighboring country with confirmed mpox cases, experienced similar symptoms earlier this month.

"Both are now stable and under close monitoring. A rapid response team has been deployed to trace contacts and prevent further spread," said Syakalima. He added that eight close contacts were under observation and surveillance efforts had been heightened nationwide.​..

Zambia reports fourth monkeypox case

Lusaka, Jan 4 (IANS) Zambia’s health authorities have reported the country’s fourth case of monkeypox, also known as mpox.

The case involves a one-year-old boy who possibly contracted the virus through close contact with a known case, said Minister of Health Elijah Muchima.

“The child is under home isolation, receiving medical care, and in stable condition,” he told reporters during a press briefing.

Last month, the health authorities reported two cases from the Kitwe city in the Copperbelt province, Xinhua news agency reported.

In October 2024, Zambia reported the first mpox case involving a Tanzanian national who came for a visit.​...

Zambia has recorded 20 cases of Mpox Since October

The country has recorded 20 cases of Mpox since the first case was reported in Chitambo District, Central Province, on October 8, 2024.

Health Minister Elijah Muchima says the ongoing spread of the virus has now reached multiple provinces across the country.

In a ministerial statement to the National Assembly, Dr. Muchima explained that the outbreak began with a confirmed case in Chitambo, and since then, the virus has spread to Lusaka and the Copperbelt provinces.

As of February 18, 2025, 20 confirmed Mpox cases have been recorded across three provinces, with Lusaka reporting 14 cases, the Copperbelt reporting 5 cases, and Central Province reporting 1 case.​..
