Zambia is facing its largest cholera epidemic. The country has recorded more than 19,000 cases and nearly 700 deaths.

Following the increase in the number of cholera cases, the organization " Médecins Sans Frontières " (MSF) sent emergency teams to provide medical, logistical and epidemiological support to the health services of the two most affected urban centers of the territory.

61 MSF members are currently working in Lusaka and Ndola alongside 340 volunteers affiliated with the Ministry of Health to respond to this emergency situation. To monitor more serious cases, MSF teams have a network of ambulances available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In the capital, a system of 14 intermediate care centers known as “ oral rehydration points ” has been set up to relieve congestion in hospitals. Water sanitation specialists oversee a network of 178 water points around Lusaka and distribute kits containing soap, chlorine and jerry cans to provide clean drinking water to the population.

The outbreak emerged in Zambia in October 2023 in the capital Lusaka, and has now spread to all provinces of the country. The disease is also hitting southern African countries hard. To slow the spread of the epidemic, other MSF teams also intervened on the other side of the border, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A vaccination campaign was recently carried out by health authorities in some localities in Zambia, but the current global shortage of cholera vaccines is a real source of concern for MSF.

Description of the crisis

Zambia faced a significant cholera outbreak that posed severe public health challenges, particularly in densely populated urban areas such as Lusaka. The outbreak was driven by multiple factors, including the rainy season's impact on water contamination and longstanding issues with sanitation and clean water access. A cholera outbreak which was first reported in October 2023 saw a dramatic increase in transmission from mid- December 2023 to around midJanuary 2024. The country as of 30/06/2024 had recorded a cumulative 20,102 cases and 740 deaths, with 10 consecutive weeks without any case being recorded according to a daily update from the Ministry of Health1 resulting in a cumulative case fatality rate of 3.7%. As of end January 2024 to date, a downward trend has been experienced in almost all the provinces except for Eastern province that recorded a small upward trend in the month of June 2024.

The country experienced its last major outbreak from October 2017 to June 2018 with a total of 5,935 reported cases. The outbreak initially emerged in peri-urban areas of Lusaka Province, just like the current outbreak where Lusaka became the epicenter followed by the Copperbelt province. Due to the high rate of transmission especially between the months of January and February 2024, the outbreak started affecting people across multiple geographical areas especially, Southern, Central and the Copperbelt provinces the later Eastern Province. Since the start of the current cholera outbreak, all the ten provinces had reported confirmed cases of Cholera. Out of 116 districts, 70 have had confirmed outbreaks and had reported cases despite the downward trend. The Cholera affected provinces mentioned above also experienced serious dry spell which has resulted in most of the water sources drying up and serious food shortages affecting most of the households. The dry spell has brought in so many challenges to communities that once suffered the Cholera outbreak impacts and there is high probability of the outbreak repeat especially as we approach the dry season that will be followed by rain season.

Cholera cases rise in Nakonde District

Three more Cholera patients have been admitted to the Urban Clinic Treatment Centre in Nakonde District.

This brings the total number of patients to ten.

Among the patients, are six males and four females including an 8 year old girl.

Muchinga Province Health Director DAVID SILWELA has confirmed the cases.

THE Ministry of Health has disclosed that Lusaka has recorded its first cholera case in 2025. According to statistics released by the ministry, Thursday, 14 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, while those currently admitted in various cholera centres were 14. Zambia ends cholera outbreak after weeks without new infections

Zambia is officially declaring an end to its latest cholera outbreak, following five consecutive weeks without any new reported infections.

The Health Ministry confirmed that the final wave of the outbreak resulted in 496 cases and 9 deaths. Health Minister Elijah Muchima says the last confirmed case was identified in May 2025, in Kabwe District, Central Province.

While this marks a major step forward in public health, officials warn that the country is not entirely out of the woods. The threat of cholera remains, especially as Zambia continues to grapple with prolonged drought conditions—conditions that undermine access to clean water and proper hygiene, increasing the risk of future outbreaks.

Minister Muchima emphasized that while the outbreak is officially over, vigilance will not end.​..
