Immunization clinics scheduled for Arctic Winter Games participants and volunteers

WHITEHORSE?Yukon?s Chief Medical Officer of Health is encouraging all Yukoners involved in the upcoming Arctic Winter Games (AWG) to ensure their immunizations are up to date.
?Events like the Arctic Winter Games bring visitors from all over the world to our territory,? Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Brendan Hanley said. ?Unfortunately they may also bring disease and infections from their respective countries, just as we may infect them with diseases for which they are not immunized. I encourage all Yukoners to get immunized to help protect our population and our visitors.?
Hanley speaks directly to Yukoners about the importance of making sure immunizations are up to date in the lead-up to the Games in a video clip on the Health and Social Services website.
To help facilitate immunization updates, nurses from Whitehorse Community Health Centre will host four dedicated clinics during the AWG volunteer orientation sessions at the Canada Games Centre flexi hall on the following dates:
Friday, February 17 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Saturday, February 18 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.
Friday, February 24 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Saturday, February 25 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.
?The last time the Arctic Winter Games were held in Yukon, there was an outbreak of whooping cough,? Hanley said. ?In order to avoid a similar experience, we hope to immunize as many people as possible.?
Coaches and athletes are also encouraged to make sure their immunizations are up to date.
The Whitehorse Health Centre, located at 9010 Quartz Road, is offering two dedicated clinics on Thursday, March 1 and Friday, March 2 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. both days. The regular drop-in hours for immunization catch up are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
