COVID-19 claims 15th Yukoner as cases take sharp upturn
Another wave of COVID-19 has hit the Yukon hard over the last week, particularly over the New Year’s weekend.
By Whitehorse Star on January 4, 2022

Another wave of COVID-19 has hit the Yukon hard over the last week, particularly over the New Year’s weekend.

There are 269 active cases, the Yukon government reported late this morning. A total of 31 new cases were reported overnight Monday.

As well, the death of a 15th Yukoner has been attributed to the virus.

Dr. Catherine Elliott, the territory’s acting chief medical officer of health, reported the latest death of the Yukon citizen. The first death was reported in October 2020.

“I am very sad to report another COVID-19 death here in the Yukon,” Elliott said in a statement last week.

“My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this individual. Out of respect for the individual and their family, we will not be releasing any additional information.”

There is a 32 per cent test positivity rate...

Yukon officials give COVID-19 update
No people in hospital for COVID-19, says Dr. Catherine Elliott, Yukon’s acting chief medical officer of health
CBC News · Posted: Jan 18, 2022 3:00 PM CT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

There are currently no people in the hospital due to COVID-19 in the Yukon, said the territory's top doctor.

Premier Sandy Silver and Dr. Catherine Elliott, the Yukon's acting chief medical officer of health, gave the latest update on COVID-19 in the territory Tuesday at a news conference.

Elliott credits the low need for hospitalization at this time to preventative public health measures, and said those are needed to help keep hospitalizations low...

...As of Tuesday, Elliott said there were 306 known active COVID-19 cases, though there are many more cases that are not counted due to rapid testing at home. Officials have also told Yukoners to assume they have COVID-19 if they have symptoms related to the illness and to skip testing...

Yukon reports 16th COVID-19 death
Acting chief medical officer of health reported the death Friday afternoon
CBC News · Posted: Jan 21, 2022 5:53 PM CT | Last Updated: January 21

Another person has died in the Yukon due to COVID-19, the acting chief medical officer of health reported Friday afternoon.

It brings the total to 16 since the first COVID-19 death was reported in the territory in October 2020...

...Elliott said the territory would not be releasing any additional information, out of respect for the person who died, and their family.

As of Friday, there were 262 known active COVID-19 cases throughout the territory, though the true number is likely higher than that due to rapid testing not being included in this count. As well, health officials have told Yukoners to assume they have COVID-19 if they have symptoms and to skip PCR testing...

Whitehorse hospital capacity partly affected by COVID-19 impact on staff, says Yukon top doc
It's 'a reflection of the spread of COVID-19' in the community and impact on healthcare workers, official says
CBC News · Posted: Jan 27, 2022 8:00 AM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

The hospital in Whitehorse has limited to full capacity due in part to COVID-19 affecting staff there, says Dr. Catherine Elliott, the acting chief medical officer of health.

As of Thursday, the territory's COVID-19 website, which now includes a link to Yukon hospital bed availability, showed the capacity in Whitehorse coded red, meaning space is either extremely limited or the hospital is full. Elliott said at the moment there is only one patient admitted for COVID-19.

Capacity in the Whitehorse intensive care unit, along with Dawson City and Watson Lake, were all coded green, meaning space is available.

"At this point, the hospital status is not in red due to COVID-19 [patients]," Elliott said about Whitehorse.

Instead she said there are a number of reasons, including a possible influx of people who may have delayed going to hospital through the pandemic and are now seeking treatment of other conditions.

It's also that healthcare workers are being affected by COVID-19, Elliott said...

...As of Thursday, Yukon had 209 known active cases, though the true number is likely higher as rapid test results are not included in this count, and health officials have told Yukoners to assume they have COVID-19 if they have symptoms and to skip PCR testing, with some exceptions.

Territory records 20th COVID-19 death
The territorial government says COVID-19 has claimed the lives of two more Yukoners.
By Tim Giilck on February 8, 2022

The territorial government says COVID-19 has claimed the lives of two more Yukoners.

In a news release sent out at 5:30 p.m. Monday, the Yukon’s acting chief medical officer of health, Dr. Catherine Elliott, announced “two additional Yukoners have died due to COVID-19.

“These are in addition to the two deaths reported last week during the COVID-19 update. This brings the total to 20 deaths due to COVID-19 since the first death was reported in October 2020...

...The four deaths announced in less than a week represent a new high by a wide margin.

The news release also included an interesting side note explaining how the government defines a COVID-19 death.

“A death is attributed to COVID-19 when COVID-19 is the cause of death or is a contributing factor,” the note states.

“This verification is important because severe outcomes and morbidity are key indicators that inform guidance and decision-making to manage public health in response to COVID-19.”

The government also announced the current case numbers from the past weekend.

The active case count stands at 128, with 49 new cases over the weekend.

Elliott has cautioned repeatedly over the last few weeks not to read too much into the numbers since access to the PCR tests has changed.

Also, results from the self-administered rapid tests Yukoners can do at home are not required to be reported to public health officials, making the case count numbers less reliable.

On Jan. 31, the government reported 193 active cases, so superficially, the numbers have improved.

However, the testing positivity rate remains at 37.5 per cent, indicating many COVID-19 cases are going undetected.

There have been 3,235 recorded cases of the virus in the territory since 2020.

There are no new COVID-19 cases hospitalized, according to the report.

However, on Monday, both the Whitehorse General Hospital and the Dawson City hospital reported some shortages of available rooms in their respective hospitals...

More COVID-19 rapid tests available and limits on gatherings eased
CMOH said the territory may be reaching the peak of the omicron wave that has caused five deaths
Haley RitchieFeb. 11, 2022 12:00 p.m.Local NewsNews

The Yukon will be rolling back some COVID-19 restrictions — and continuing with others — as the territory looks to wind down from Omicron’s peak.

“It looks at this point that we’ve reached the Omicron peak and we have early signals that we may be starting to decline. These are early and there’s much uncertainty at the time and we need a bit more time to watch the trends to be certain,” said chief medical officer Dr. Catherine Elliott during a press conference on Feb. 10...

...The ideal positivity rate is five per cent, but the current average in the Yukon is 35 per cent, indicating widespread community transmission continues.

Right now there are 99 active cases in the territory, among people being tested. Five deaths during the Omicron wave have brought the total number of COVID-19 deaths to 20. Two active outbreaks remain at the Thomson Centre and Whistle Bend long-term care homes...

WHITEHORSE - Yukon's premier says the territory is set to move ahead with plans to ease many COVID-19 restrictions starting next week.

Sandy Silver says capacity limits on gatherings will be lifted, and bars and restaurants can return to normal service with dancing and mingling between tables on March 4.

He told a news conference Thursday that masks will still be required in indoor public places and proof of vaccination must still be shown to access certain settings.

Acting chief medical officer of health Dr. Catherine Elliott says masks are an effective way to reduce transmission and vaccines help prevent severe illness, while officials are continuously evaluating the need for those remaining measures.

She says Yukon's COVID-19 case activity has been declining, with 47 active infections in the territory on Thursday, but some transmission is still happening so those who feel sick need to stay away from others. ..

Yukon to drop COVID-19 vaccination requirement for gov't staff, mask mandate
Wed, March 2, 2022, 12:08 p.m.

Yukon plans to drop its remaining COVID-19 public health restrictions in the coming weeks, including mandatory masking and the requirement for public servants to be vaccinated.

Premier Sandy Silver made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday morning.

"After a long and difficult two years, 2022 is looking promising," Silver said, alongside acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Catherine Elliott.

"We have moved past the Omicron wave, and thanks to the diligence of Yukoners again following these public health measures, we have prevented our health care system from being overwhelmed."...

...As of Tuesday afternoon, the government was reporting 43 confirmed active cases of COVID-19 with four of them new. The test positivity rate for lab-based PCR testing was 29.6 per cent.

The government's official count does not include all positive cases, as Yukoners who test at home are not all required to report their results.

Also on Tuesday, health officials reported the territory's 21st death from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

Elliott said on Wednesday that the territory was past the crest of the Omicron wave, and case numbers have stabilized...

Fifty-eight active COVID-19 cases reported
There are 58 active cases and 30 new cases of COVID-19 posted on the Yukon government website today.
By Whitehorse Star on March 8, 2022

Revised - The COVID-19 numbers in the Yukon continue to increase slowly.

According to the numbers posted by government officials Tuesday, there are 61 active cases and nine new overnight from Monday.

More disturbingly, the testing positivity rate has risen to 35 per cent, indicating a high level of community spread and likely many undiagnosed cases.

The positivity rate has been on the increase for more than a week, after dipping to about 23 per cent at one point.

That’s trending in the wrong direction.

In previous weeks, the acting chief medical officer of health, Dr. Catherine Elliott, had said an acceptable rate would be in the five per cent range...

The Yukon government and public health officials don’t seem to be wavering from their plan to continue relaxing COVID-19 health restrictions despite an uptick in numbers.
By Whitehorse Star on March 14, 2022

The Yukon government and public health officials don’t seem to be wavering from their plan to continue relaxing COVID-19 health restrictions despite an uptick in numbers.

The acting chief medical officer of health, Dr. Catherine Elliott, provided the Star with the following statement this morning.

“Though we are moving out of the worst of the Omicron wave, it is clear from the numbers you see today that the pandemic is not over,” she said...

...The numbers posted on the government’s COVID-19 Dashboard on Friday show 65 active cases and nine new cases overnight.

The testing positivity rate, which is a crucial indicator, remained very high at 40.5 per cent, down from nearly 44 per cent last week.

Numbers from the weekend and today won’t be available until late this afternoon.

The mask mandate and the vaccine passports are due to be lifted Friday.
