It should be pointed out that Yuan Guoyong said that the fastest vaccine will not be ready for clinical trials within 1 year.
On January 28, Yuan Guoyong, Chair Professor of Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology, School of Microbiology, The University of Hong Kong, and a member of the high-level expert group of the Chinese National Health Commission, said that the Department of Microbiology at the University of Hong Kong has initially developed a Coronavirus vaccine.
The effectiveness and safety of the vaccine can only be clarified after animal testing. Yuan Guoyong said the vaccine is expected to be clinically tested within 1 year.
If proven effective, the vaccine can prevent both influenza and the new coronavirus. At the same time, Yuan Guoyong also expressed the hope to cooperate with mainland vaccine companies for clinical trials.
Yuan Guoyong has been developing vaccines against influenza viruses for the past three years. The vaccine is a nasal spray, not an injection. Related research has been published in the academic 'Microbiology' (mBio) and has been patented.
Yuan Guoyong's team found a genetic sequence in a case sample of a new type of coronavirus pneumonia diagnosed in the Shenzhen University Hospital, and put the protein on the surface of the virus, the spike protein, into the flu vaccine.
