Hit a state of shock after discovering a young Saudi man after an Egyptian doctor diagnosed a disease of swine influenza viruses after entering the hospital in Fayoum governorate, with suspected bird flu due to the increase in temperature .. Where sampling was required of it and sent to labs central Ministry of Health, to make sure of illness or not.

I agree with the new thread title, as that it what it is. But the article (or the infernal translator) makes the same "avian" error that fooled ProMed last week. A different reading on this one might suspect an H1N1/H5N1 co-infection.

So they thought it was avian influenza, due to the sharp increase in temperature. After the exam he concluded it was swine flu.

The man left the hospital....[I think] And test results are pending.

I believe the tests were sent out. And there has not been a confirmation yet. I'm surprised the man left the hospital....if I understood that correctly.

But we know the exposure history. There is lots of H1N1 in both Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and comparatively little H5N1 in Egypt and none in Saudi Arabia. The chance that this is an H5N1 case is extremely small. And if they suspected H5N1, they wouldn't have let him leave (and he would have been too sick).

I am, and had the man had contact with a sick chicken, I would agree with you. But - we could overlook one or two of these things, but the lack of exposure history, the arrival from Saudi Arabia, the quick recovery, and the release from hospital - the simplest explanation that fits the facts is probably correct.

Yes, but I believe in the past month, say, that there have been about five confirmed H5N1 cases, and hundreds (thousands?) of H1N1 cases. Probability says that a flu case picked at random in Egypt is still H1N1.

But that is why H5N1 surveillance in Egypt has gotten much harder.

Egypt just recently admitted they get 50 suspected cases of bird flu a day. They can't tell who has what there.. and can't test for h1n1 either. This situation again has happened and there have been numerous recent cases of this. Don't look for a change anytime soon. Indo is the same way. H1N1 is there in a big way but bf has not gone anywhere.

I would think that the sign of bf trouble would be a death cluster. Even a mild H5N1 strain would have a much higher CFR than the H1N1 pandemic strain. The first sign of efficient H5N1 spread would be a pile of deaths, not a laboratory detection.
