Kindest' teenager dies of meningitis

A TEENAGER who was chosen as the kindest member of her form at Ryedale School in North Yorkshire has died of suspected meningitis.
Lois Phelps,13, from Kirkbymoorside, a Year 9 student, had recently joined the school's hockey team and had taken part in a production of My Fair Lady.
Headteacher Geoff Jenkinson said the 560-pupil school in Nawton, Kirkbymoorside, had been shocked by Lois's death. "She was a lovely girl. She was a very happy young person and very able across a whole range of areas."
Mr Jenkinson, who said Lois had two older brothers, held a special assembly to tell pupils about her death and sought advice from the North Yorkshire Bereavement Counselling Service.
"They came up with some very practical help. One suggestion was to create a memory box with poems, notes and images.
"Simultaneously her parents requested any electronic images which her friends might have on cameras and mobile phones.
"Our technician has compiled a DVD and some of her friends have provided some text to go with the images. They also told me about her favourite piece of music, so we created this DVD which we hope sums up her personality."
Consultant in communicable disease control at North Yorkshire and Humber Health Protection Unit Dr Simon Padfield said: "This is a tragic case reminding us what a devastating illness this can be and our deepest sympathies are with the family concerned.
"The crucial thing is being able to recognise the signs and symptoms and to get treatment as soon as possible."
Dr Padfield stressed that it was uncommon to see linked cases of meningitis.
A funeral service will be held at Woodlands Crematorium in Scarborough on Tuesday at 2.40pm.
