SHABWA, May 30 (Saba)- A medical source said on Friday more than 500 persons have been affected by a dengue fever outbreak in Shabwa province, south-east of the Yemeni capital, Sana'a.

Deputy Director of the Health bureau in Shabwa Ahmed Saeed said the spread of dengue fever has increased in the province during the past two days, affirming the epidemic had infected more than 500 persons.

But he mentioned any deaths were not registered due to the illness.

Saeed voiced concern over the worsening health conditions of the province due to the proliferation of dengue virus and the absence of any proper government attention or role to combat the epidemic, noting government efforts are still temporary.

Almotamar.net - Local sources in the governorate of Shabwa said Wednesday that around 500 cases of dengue have been registered in the governorate during the past few days in three districts of the province.

The source pointed out that a medical team has arrived the province and with hem necessary medicines.

The executive bureau in Shabwa province on Monday formed an operation room in the province to follow up and observe the spread of the disease and to take necessary measures to encounter and control the disease.

The meeting studied a report on practical measures and arrangements taken by the health bureau in the province for fighting he disease in al the districts where the infection appeared.

SHABWA, June 02 (Saba)- Medical sources said on Monday the number of people infected with dengue fever amounted to more than 1000 cases in Shabwa province, south-east of the Yemeni capital, Sana'a.

The sources were quoted by the independent newsyemen.net as saying that the numbers of dengue fever cases had increased remarkable in some districts of the province.

The sources explained that field spraying processes are still continuous, pointing out that the spraying campaign aims at eradicating mosquitoes which cause dengue fever.

Last week, deputy Director of the Health bureau in Shabwa Ahmed Saeed said the outbreak of the tropical epidemic has infected more than 500 persons in the province during two days only.

Mentioning any deaths due to the illness were not registered, Saeed voiced concern over the worsening health conditions in Shabwa due to the proliferation of dengue mosquitoes and the lack of healthy services in order to combating the epidemic.

SANAA, 4 June 2008 (IRIN) - Field teams in the southern province of Shabwa have been combating an outbreak of dengue fever that hit the area in mid-May and affected hundreds, health officials have said.

The epidemic has broken out in three of 17 districts in Shabwa, including Mayfaa, Hotaib, and al-Saeed, according to the local health office in Shabwa.

Ahmed Awadh, head of the Dengue fever department, said the number of cases reported so far was 969.

"The main reason was stagnant water, where mosquitoes gather. Rains have also played a role in spreading the disease," he told IRIN on 3 June.

Awadh said the infectious disease had claimed the lives of five people because of ignorance as it was treated as a mere fever.

"Our worry at the moment is stagnant water and rainfall, which would worsen the situation," he said.

Ahmed Saeed, deputy head of Shabwa Health Office, told IRIN that people's awareness of the epidemic was very important in trying to prevent it.

More awareness needed

"It is not a matter of disease but awareness. People keep water in uncovered storage jars. They should get rid of stagnant water, too," he said.

In addition to combating the disease, the field teams in the affected areas help educate citizens about dengue fever and how to prevent it, according to the health official.

"The symptoms of dengue fever include severe headache, skin eruption, muscle pain, arthritis, and also pain behind the eyes. The field teams advise citizens with such symptoms to go to any nearby health facility," he said.
The main reason was stagnant water, where mosquitoes gather. Rains have also played a role in spreading the disease.

Saeed further noted that the field teams had distributed mosquito nets and sprayed the breeding areas and homes.

"The field teams distribute medicines for the infected people after sending them to health facilities," he said.

Tens of dengue fever cases were also reported in the western province of al-Hudeidah. But health officials there refused to give further details when contacted by IRIN, saying that making the cases public would cause panic among residents.

The western al-Hudeidah governorate, 474km from Sanaa, was hit by dengue fever in 2005, and a total of 392 cases were reported, with 15 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dengue is a mosquito-borne infection caused by one of four virus serotypes (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4). A more severe form of the disease is known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is most serious in children.

According to WHO, two-fifths of the world's population - some 2.5 billion people - are at risk and there may be 50 million dengue infections worldwide every year.

The disease is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, southeast Asia and the western Pacific, WHO said.

An outbreak of dengue fever has hit the southern Shabwa province of Yemen, affecting hundreds since mid-May, health officials say.

The number of cases reported so far is nearing a thousand, and five have died as a result.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne infection caused by one of the four dengue viruses. A severe form of the disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever, is most serious in children. Symptoms appear three to 14 days after the infective bite and range from mild fever to incapacitating high fever, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain and rashes.

Two fifths of the world's population ? some 2.5 billion people ? are at risk of being infected, according to the World health Organization (WHO) and it is endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, southeast Asia and the western Pacific.

Health officials in Yemen say its spread is largely due to ignorance, a lack of awareness and the fact that it is being treated as a normal fever, according to IRIN.

Stagnant waters and rainfall are worsening the situation.

Field teams are distributing mosquito nets and spraying breeding areas and homes.

Director of the Health Office in the province Salim Nasser confirmed the teams carried out a control spray against mosquito of dengue fever for three weeks, noting over 25 cases were examined last Thursday.

Nasser affirmed that eight cases of the 25 cases were affected the disease, stressing that no deaths were reported.

Dengue Fever fills four people in Yemen

A 3-year-old child died in Lahj province in the south of Yemen, early on Wednesday due to dengue fever, reported local sources.

The sources also said that many people in the area are suffering from fever whose symptoms are similar to those of the dengue fever, including strong headaches, dizziness and red eyes.

Official sources stated that 115 Yemenis were officially confirmed as dengue fever patients from among 1903 suspected cases found in different provinces of the country since the beginning of this year.

Recently, three Yemenis died most probably because of this epidemic in the province of Shabwa, in the east of the country, as stated by an official report released on Tuesday and carried by the state-run news agency Saba.

"Until now we cannot confirm one hundred percent that the three people died because of this disease," the deputy Minister of Health, Majed al-Junaid said to Saba News Agency.

A total of 64 people were confirmed as dengue fever patients in the eastern province of Hadhramout, 35 cases in the south eastern province of Shabwa, 9 cases in the western coastal province of Hodeidah, 4 cases in the southern province of Lahj, and 3 cases also in the southern province of Abyan.

HM registers further 180 cases of dengue fever

SANA'A, June 30 (Saba) - Health Ministry registered 180 case of dengue fever within week, the ministry's report said.

According to the report, the cases increased since beginning of this year from 1903 cases to 2083 on Saturday.

The cases appeared in Shabwa, Abyan, Hodeida, Hadramout and Lahj governorates.

Dengue fever is a virus disease which has hit about 120 countries around the world since the middle of the last century.

In a press conference, al-Janid said that the ministry controls the virus efficiently, pointing out to current virus of the dengue fever is weak then that was appeared in 2005.

SANAA, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Three women died of dengue fever on Saturday in Yemen's western mountainous areas, local media reported.

Among the dead were a mother and her daughter, the reports said.

Many local residents were taken ill with suspected symptoms of dengue fever, the reports added, citing a local official.

The official urged local sanitary authorities to provide prompt medical aid to those in need.

According to a report released by the infectious diseases supervision bureau of the health ministry late last month, 115 cases of dengue fever had been diagnosed in five provinces since the beginning of this year and three of them had died.

Almotamar.net - A parliamentary source in Raima governorate mentioned Saturday that two women and a child have died today of dengue fever. MP Ahmed Mohammed al-Dhabibi for the governorate of Raima pointed out to almotamar.net that the victims were a woman, her daughter and a third woman from the village of Bani al-Dhabibi in the district of al-Jubain.

Al-Dhabibi demanded the Health Ministry to speed up saving the citizens in Raima governorate as the disease infiltrated it, indicating that large number of people in the same area is suffering from similar syndromes believed to be the dengue.

The MP also said he had informed the Health Office in the governorate on the necessity of visiting the area to rescue the infected cases.

Medical facilities in Yemen, particularly away from the main towns, are poor.

SANA'A, Nov. 24(Saba) - Heath Office in Taiz province has registered the spread of dengue fever disease in Al-Ashrooh village in the province .

Director of Health Office at Jabal Habash district in Taiz province Abdul-Kareem Al-Barakani told NewsYemen that there are two people affected by this disease.

Al-Barakani confirmed that he will send a team to combat this disease and to raise awareness of this virus.

TAIZ, Dec. 21 ? The Taiz Governorate has been hit hard by a recent outbreak of Dengue Fever, with Al-Jumhoori Hospital reporting up to 525 cases in the past three months alone.

Dengue Fever can be tested for by two methods, the Test Cassette and the Elisa Test, according to Dr. Ahmed Abddulaah Mansur, Chairman of Virology Department at Al-Jumhoori Hospital. However, the availability of such methods is reportedly inadequate. "The Elisa Test is available only at the Aljumhuri Hospital, where cases are referred to from all other private or public hospitals and laboratories," Mansur said.

Other private labs have also reported scores of cases, with Alameri Laboratory reporting five this month alone.

"Since there is a shortage of test equipment, we can not effectively diagnose patients, as most cases are identified through a general blood test," said Dr. Waleed Yasin, a lab technician.

Dengue Fever is a mosquito-borne infection that can take one of two forms - Dengue Fever (DF) and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). These have both affected the rural areas in Taiz, including in Alshrooh Village in Jabal Habashi District.

The main reasons for the spread of this infectious disease are stagnant water, open-liquid containers, and rainfall in areas where mosquitoes breed.

Symptoms of the disease include severe headaches, rashes, muscular pain, joint pain, back and even eye pain.

Mansur said that to help combat the spread of the disease in areas where it is endemic, the authorities concerned should raise awareness on how to take preventative measures.

In June 2008, among the provinces hit by Dengue Fever was the eastern province of Shabwa, contributing to more than 2000 cases of infection, and tens of deaths.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the epidemic also took hold in the western province of Hodeidah in 2005, resulting in a total of 392 cases of infection and 15 deaths.

Some 2.5 billion of the world's population are at risk, and there may be up to 50 million annual cases of infections worldwide.

The epidemic has now spread into more than 100 countries in Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific.

Health officials in Shabwa said about 70 infected cases with the disease were reported in June and this month.

Responding to the development, the authorities have taken action sending teams to spray the suspected affected areas.
