In Yemen, cholera is spreading so quickly that one child is infected nearly every 35 seconds, according to Save the Children.

The infectious disease, which is spread via contaminated food and water, can prove fatal if not treated quickly, and is already killing around 30 people each day.

Some 942 cholera-related deaths have been registered, and the rate of infection has more than tripled over the past two weeks.

Death toll reaches 1,170 in Yemen cholera outbreak; over 1,70,000 suspected cases, says WHO
WorldPTIJun, 21 2017 13:37:36 IST

Geneva: Cholera has killed 1,170 people in war-ravaged Yemen and the number of suspected cases is now at nearly 2,000 a day, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.

And the devastation wrought by the conflict there made coping with the outbreak that much more difficult, WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva.

"The number of suspected cholera cases is rising", said Jasarevic.

"We are talking close to 2,000 suspected cases per day", he warned, which meant that Yemen was now suffering the world's largest cholera outbreak.

Since WHO began collecting data on the outbreak on 27 April, it has registered more than 01,70,000 suspected cholera cases across 20 of Yemen's 21 governorates, Jasarevic said.

Since the outbreak was declared in April, an estimated 1,265 people have died, she said.
