October 20, 2006, 10:15
A study by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in Port Elizabeth shows that 14 patients have died due to defaulting on their treatment for Multi-Drug Resistant tuberculosis, or XDR-TB.
The study was done on 20 patients who were on second-line treatment.
Sizwe Kupelo, the provincial health spokesperson, says however the cause of death is unclear.
Kupelo says a team of doctors has been sent to Port Elizabeth to track down the six defaulters who are still alive for further research. "At the moment, there is no need to panic as the research is still continuing."
