Health officials confirm one case of norovirus

By Tram Whitehurst, Jackson Hole, Wyoming
January 2, 2012

Teton County public health officials have confirmed one case of norovirus and suspect other people who have reported symptoms may also have the illness.

Although several samples have yet to come back from the state lab, the fact that at least one case has been con-firmed means others are likely positive as well, Terri Gregory, Teton County Public Health manager, said.

?We continue to have people call in reporting symptoms,? she said. ?It?s pretty widespread at this point.?

Likely Norovirus makes 200 ill

...Corporate officials at Golden Corral announced Dec. 13 they were voluntarily closing the restaurant for 24 hours to conduct total "top-to-bottom" cleaning and disinfection. Health Department officials wholeheartedly approved the plan, emphasizing that this is the approach that has been implemented in many other outbreak situations, such as in the cruise ship industry several years ago. "The department has been working with all levels of Golden Corral management as the investigation has proceeded, and we congratulate them for making this difficult decision," said Bob Harrington, Director of the Casper-Natrona County Health Department. "After interviewing persons who reported illness and claimed that they ate at Golden Corral, the statistical evidence was increasingly pointing to Golden Corral as the most likely source of almost 200 illnesses." He said that the illnesses were likely caused by a Norovirus, but that won't be confirmed until laboratory testing some time from now.

The Casper-Natrona County Health Department is investigating several reports of intestinal illnesses. We are coordinating our efforts with the Epidemiology Section of the Wyoming Department of Health. Some reports have suggested a local restaurant, but others have reported no contact there. Symptoms include Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea and Headaches, and duration is about 24-48 hours.

If you have experienced these symptoms in the past 3-4 days, please call the Health Department at 307-235-9340.

Voluntary Closure of Restaurant in Illness Investigation

Golden Corral announced a voluntary 24-hour closure to thoroughly clean and disinfect the restaurant. Almost 200 people reported illness after eating at the restaurant, and Corporate Management proposed that they close to help break the transmission chain.

Over 300 Norovirus Cases Linked to Golden Corral, State Investigation to be Completed Soon

By Anthony Pollreisz
Yesterday

The Casper-Natrona County Public Health Department says the Wyoming Department of Epidemiology is drawing closer to completing its exhaustive investigation into a Norovirus outbreak that sickened several hundred customers of a newly-opened Casper restaurant last month.

Public health director Robert Harrington says local and state health agencies have officially linked 306 Norovirus cases with the Golden Corral restaurant in Casper.

?There?s no question about it, those 306 did have exposure at the Golden Corral restaurant in the proper incubation period before their illness,? Harrington said. ?Their symptoms fit with the illness and they got sick at that restaurant.?
