TORONTO THE GOOD (CP) ?

Some 1,500 participants from 35 countries are in Toronto to discuss how to cope with and recover from disasters.

The three-day conference, which officially opens today, will look at ways governments, corporations and utilities can prepare for disasters.

Delegates will discuss how to prevent, mitigate, respond to and recover from catastrophes, including pandemics, severe weather and terror attacks.

David Auger of the Canadian Centre for Emergency Preparedness, which is hosting the conference, says when disaster strikes, it doesn?t just strike the public sector, it strikes everybody.

He says if there?s no electricity, water, gas stations or bank machines, things grind to a halt quite quickly.
Auger adds that officials have to talk and plan together now because once a disaster strikes, it?s the wrong time for people to start introducing themselves
