Wolbachia bacteria inhibit dengue virus replication by hijacking gene expression in mosquitoes, Australian researchers have found.

Molecular entomologist, Associate Professor Sassan Asgari of the University of Queensland, and colleagues, report their findings today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Wolbachia is causing a lot of changes to gene expression in the host," says Asgari. "This study shows how methlylation mediated by microRNA is changed, and this in turn affect gene expression..."
