Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary restricts trail access, ends corn sales amid bird flu concern

GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is making some changes after the recent resurfacing of avian flu in Brown County.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, officials announced that until further notice, Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary will stop selling corn and no longer allow the public to walk around the Raptor Trail. Visitors are asked not to bring corn to the Observation Building parking lot.

Additionally, the sanctuary said it is not admitting waterfowl patients at this time. If you have any waterfowl concerns, contact the Wisconsin DNR's wildlife hotline at (608) 267-0866.

These restrictions are in an effort to reduce the possible exposure of Bay Beach's captive birds to any wild birds who may be ill.

It comes as Village of Howard animal control officers continue to recover dozens of dead geese from Duck Creek Quarry, and dead geese have also been discovered in other areas of Brown County. It's the same area where a bird flu outbreak occurred in early January 2024.

Bird flu creeps closer to Rock County

By HANNAH POWELL, 19 hours ago
JANESVILLE — A recent outbreak of bird flu has been sickening animals across the states of Wisconsin and Illinois, with recent cases just north of Janesville in Dane County and south of the state line in Woodstock County, Ill. Bird flu has also infected one person in Wisconsin.
-snip-

As of Thursday, one person had been diagnosed with bird flu in Barron, Wis., according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. No people had yet been reported infected in Illinois, according to Illinois Department of Public Health.

However, as of Thursday morning, there had been reported animal cases in Brown, Wood and Dane counties in Wisconsin. Dane county currently has 60 reported cases, mostly of Canada Geese, according to Jasmine Batten, a wildlife health supervisor with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
-snip-
Batten said while no animal deaths potentially tied to bird flu had been reported as of Thursday in Rock County, that could because no deaths have occurred — or because they haven’t been reported.

DNR Reports Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza In Wild Merganser Collected From Milwaukee County

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced that laboratory tests have identified the H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) in a wild merganser collected from Milwaukee County last week.

Testing was completed at the U.S. Geological Survey's National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, and the presumptive positive result is consistent with the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus.

The DNR has also received additional reports of sick or dead waterfowl, mostly mergansers, along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties. In total, these reports have involved less than 50 birds.

Since mid-December, the H5 HPAI virus has been detected in six counties – Dane, St. Croix, Wood, Brown, Racine and Milwaukee. The majority of mortality reports have been for swans and Canada geese.

"It is important to remember that avian influenza is still present in Wisconsin, and we are seeing it affect birds in isolated areas around the state," said Jasmine Batten, DNR Wildlife Health Supervisor. "However, this winter's HPAI detections in wild birds have remained relatively low. The best advice we can give is to remain aware and avoid handling wild birds as much as possible."

According to public health officials, the risk to the general public from avian influenza remains low. Still, people should avoid handling sick or dead wildlife or allowing their pets to come into contact with sick or dead wildlife when possible. If you must touch a dead bird, follow guidance provided on the DNR’s Avian Influenza webpage. More information on HPAI and public health can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Health Services' Avian Influenza A Virus webpage.

Reporting Sick Or Dead Wildlife

The DNR is interested in groups (5 or more) sick or dead wild birds. Depending on the specifics of the case, DNR staff will decide whether to collect a sample. The public can report sick or dead wild birds through the DNR’s Sick or Dead Bird Reporting Form or by contacting the Wildlife Switchboard at DNRWildlifeSwitchboard@wisconsin.gov or 608-267-0866.

More information on avian influenza viruses and the ongoing response to this HPAI strain is available on the DNR’s Avian Influenza webpage. The DNR will continue to update the webpage with any future HPAI findings in wild Wisconsin birds.

Officials: 90 dead birds removed from pond, deaths possibly caused by bird flu
Mar. 2, 2025 at 4:20 PM EST

LITTLE CHUTE, Wis. (WBAY/Gray News) - At least 90 dead ducks were removed from a pond in Wisconsin, and officials are investigating if their deaths were caused by bird flu.

Kent Taylor, the public works director for the Village of Little Chute, said crews removed 90 dead mallards from a storm pond Wednesday.

“Several of our employees were viewing Facebook or social media, and they had seen that there were several reports that there were some dead ducks in our Buchanan storm pond,” Taylor said.

Officials contacted the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for help in removing the dead birds from the pond in Little Chute.

DNR: Samples of 90 dead birds removed from Little Chute pond test negative for bird flu

By WBAY news staff
Published: Mar. 14, 2025 at 10:06 AM CDT| Updated: 11 minutes ago

LITTLE CHUTE, Wis. (WBAY) - The Wisconsin DNR said Friday the test samples from the 90 birds found dead in a pond last month all came back negative for bird flu. As reported in February, the DNR took samples from six of the dead mallards.

The DNR said the test results are from the National Wildlife Health Center, and all of the birds sampled in Little Chute were negative for HPAI (bird flu). While the DNR is still waiting for confirmation on the exact cause of death, the DNR said the culprit is most likely a “fungal infection.”

Two of the longest-returning peregrine falcons to We Energies' nest boxes have died of presumably bird flu, according to We Energies spokesperson Alison Trouy.

The falcons, Brinn and Beasley, both nested at the Port Washington Generating Station. Brinn's body was recently found in the nest box, while Beasley stopped returning to the nest within a few days of Brinn's death, leading the company's falcon manager to believe Beasley has also died.

Brinn had nested there since 2014, and Beasley arrived in 2017. Together, they produced 22 chicks

-snip-

We Energies has maintained peregrine falcon nest boxes on several of its power plants since the early 1990s, according to its website. Since then, more than 450 falcons have hatched at these nests — amounting to 20% of all peregrine falcons born in Wisconsin.

"There is a small silver lining," Truoy added. "We have had two new peregrine falcons take up residence at the nest box since Brinn and Beasley’s deaths, and we are hopeful that we will see the first eggs in the coming days or weeks."
