Wisconsin confirms 11 H1N1 flu deaths in last week

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State health officials are confirming 11 more deaths related to the H1N1 flu in Wisconsin.

The Department of Health Services said Wednesday the deaths were confirmed in the past week across the state, bringing to 31 the number of deaths statewide since last spring.

The new deaths includes two each in Dane and Portage counties, and single cases in Jefferson, Kenosha, Marathon, Oconto, Ozaukee, Racine and Waupaca counties.

The department say H1N1 flu cases are modestly decreasing across the state, but the presence of the virus still remains widespread.

Minnesota health officials are reporting five new deaths from H1N1 flu.

The state Department of Health says 26 Minnesotans have died from confirmed H1N1 flu cases since the virus appeared in the state, with another two deaths from unspecified flu like illnesses.

Nine schools reported outbreaks in the past week, compared with 40 schools the week before. Two nursing homes also had outbreaks.

State Health Commissioner Sanne Magnan told WCCO-AM the update is good news. She says the state is on the down side of the second wave of the virus.

Magnan says that leaves time to get people vaccinated in case a third wave comes. She says that's likely after the first of the year.

West Allis reports swine flu death
By Jesse Garza of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: Dec. 2, 2009 6:46 p.m.

Health officials in West Allis on Wednesday confirmed the city's first death related to the H1N1 influenza virus.

No information on the victim was provided in a news release from West Allis health commissioner Terry Brandenburg confirming the death.

Swine flu appears to be waning around the country, though there remains "considerable H1N1 activity," in Wisconsin, according to the state Department of Health Services.

The death in West Allis brings to six the number of confirmed swine flu-related deaths in the last week in Wisconsin, bringing the state's total to 41 since the spring. Five other newly reported deaths occurred in the following counties: Douglas (2), Oneida, Outagamie and Walworth. Since September the state has had a total of 698 hospitalizations due to the novel H1N1 virus.

More than 1.2 million doses of H1N1 vaccine have been allocated to the state.

For more information online on the flu, go to www.flu.wisconsin.gov/">www.flu.wisconsin.gov. The site includes the 2-1-1 vaccine locator link, which provides information on vaccine clinics around the state.

The state Department of Health Services reported Thursday that 43 people have died from the so-called swine flu so far this fall.

The news comes even though the department also says Wisconsin is following the national trend with a decline in overall cases. However, swine flu cases are expected to be seen throughout the flu season and another wave could occur.

Since September there have been 821 hospitalizations due to swine flu in Wisconsin. Two of the three new deaths were reported in Sheboygan County and the third was in West Allis.
