I guess I misread one of the above-mentioned sources...Lots of sources are known for their unwavering allegiance to a particular idea; if we are going to list Promed as a propaganda source, might it also be accurate to list Recombinomics, as it takes a similar (if opposite) hard line? To be honest, I read ProMed and I find that posters do from time to time acknowledge that wild birds play a role in spreading HPAI H5N1

In order to do so we must strive to understand the problem in order to solve it as best we can, and in the case of dispersal and transmission of HPAI H5N1, that problem consists of multiple factors including (among others) poultry and its attendant contamination, the bird trade, and migratory/wild birds. Stay focused on one and another will bite you instead...

I have tried to state my arguments as rationally as possible, but the only response I get is that "it is wild birds". In that case, I wanted to add to my earlier posts, that "it is not wild birds [usually]". Beat that :) Plus, if ProMed were propaganda, they'd certainly go that extra mile and post every day, don't you think? And then where to put those darn posts where they acknowledge that wild birds can play a role in H5N1 transmission--hopefully those posters lose their ProMed cards...

By the way, checking my calendar (or at least the Honk Kong Bird Watcher's Society's), I see that while migration happens every month of the year, peak migration is September-November and Late March-early May. But those limey birdwatchers are suspect, so maybe I should go back to my calendar...Hmmmm...

Also, consulting my calendar , I see that the aforementioned solstice holiday happens (drumroll please)....

Who would've guessed it. That there are other things that happen on a yearly basis that affect poultry importation, bird trade, and contamination from each (aka known vectors of H5N1).

To sum up...

It was probably not birds. Check your calendar :)

The story of H5N1 is in the sequence. Hong Kong reports wild bird infections each year in January and February. They have been doing this for every year since 2002. The wild birds bring in the new sequences. The track record is quite clear.

Infections will be reported for this month and next. That's life in the big city.

I guess that the really easy way for someone who disputes wild birds being the major factor would be for them to grab some sequences from Genbank and do some sequence matching analysis themselves.

The geographic and time based travel-logs of h5n1 evolution and distribution, sure does seem to me to indicate that wild birds play a major role in the spread of h5n1.

And another question that comes to mind is this..If wild birds (especially ducks) are the natural reservoir of influenza virus and have been for as long as influenza has been around, then why would they not be the logical carriers and spreaders of the virus? Doesn't it seem logical ?

But then i'm just looking at the scientific data, so what would i know? ;)

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, please respect that.

The fact is many migratory bird species over-winter in the Hong Kong area, this layover gives the virus time to spread between wild bird and poultry populations.

Depending on your point of view you can decide for yourself who is giving it to whom.

Something was strange about a little brown bird found dead with bird flu this month in one of Hong Kong's busiest shopping districts.

The bird -- a scaly breasted munia -- usually lives in rural areas. So what was it and five others doing flitting around in such a bustling, crowded area -- possibly exposing some of the thousands of locals and tourists to the deadly virus?

Experts think the bird may have been a prop in a Buddhist ritual that involves freeing hundreds of birds to improve one's karma. As the threat of bird flu re-emerges in Asia, the government finds itself in the awkward position of urging that the religious practice be stopped to protect the public's health.

When health officials discovered that the scaly breast munia -- found on New Year's Eve -- tested positive for the H5 virus, they held a news conference. A few days later, they said further tests showed the bird had the H5N1 strain.

The scaly breasted munia is native to Hong Kong, but it is usually found in tussocks in rural areas, said Lew Young, a manager at Hong Kong's Mai Po bird sanctuary.

"Six scaly breasted munia being found dead at the same spot at one time easily leads one to suspect whether they were being released," he said.

The birds are commonly used in the Buddhist ceremonies, Young added.

"They are usually transported to Hong Kong from the mainland in boxes. If one of the birds is sick, the rest are likely to be sick as well since they are crammed in one box," he said.
Aidia Chan, a postgraduate student in ecology, said Buddhist groups practiced the ritual one to 18 times each year, releasing as many as 3,000 birds each time.

HONG KONG, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Hong Kong should tighten imports of wild birds from China, which are released en masse at Buddhist religious rites, due to the risk they could spread bird flu to poultry, experts say.


Six scaly-breasted munias -- a popular species of "prayer birds" used for release in Buddhist rituals to enhance a devotee's karma -- were found dead in a busy shopping on New Year's eve, including one which tested positive for the H5N1 virus.


"We really have to seriously consider this possibility of (prayer bird) infection," said Malik Peiris, a virologist and leading bird flu expert at the University of Hong Kong.


"In Hong Kong, there is no H5N1 activity in poultry. So for this bird that was found dead, the question is how (it) got infected?"


Prayer bird species range from munias, Japanese white-eye, white-rumped munia and tree sparrows costing as little as HK$4 (US$0.50) each, to the more expensive azure-winged magpies and Mongolian larks. Hunters in China use large fine "mist" nets that the birds fly into.


While the Hong Kong government tightly regulates poultry imports, laws for wild bird imports are much more lax, making it a potential crack in the city's bird flu defences.


The territory banned imports of poultry from Japan on Monday after a fresh outbreak of bird flu there, the South China Morning Post reported.
