Public health experts are sounding the alarm as whooping cough cases increase nationwide. Numbers have quadrupled as of week 33, reported on August 17, 2024, compared to the same time period in 2023, per the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thus far this year, more than 10,800 pertussis cases have been confirmed by health departments across the U.S., according to CBS News. It is the largest surge since 2012. The Washington Post reports that from January 2023 through May 2024 whooping cough caused 15 deaths in the U.S...
